AND FINALLY...
The good news is we've finally got ourselves a proper mountain stage. The bad news? We're heading for Andorra. I'll catch you bright and early.

JOAO ALMEIDA: I'M HAPPY
We knew we would be fighting for the win but there are a lot of good teams here and we would need to be realistic. But yeah, i think we did a perfect job and we deserve it as well. For the team atmosphere it's good, but of course the gaps are small. We had a plan, we did it perfect, everyone was strong. Everybody was a little tired at the end, but we were going all in. I was always looking back to the fourth guy, while smashing the pedals. I'm happy. I would like to have the jersey, it's a beautiful jersey and I've never worn it before. It doesn't matter when, though. We are closer and closer to it. We'll give everything we have.

NEW GENERAL CLASSIFICATION TOP 5
1. Jonas Vingegaard 16'11'24"
2. Juan Ayuso +08"
3. Joao Almeida +08"
4. Marc Soler +08"
5. Giulio Ciccone +09"

Remarkable stuff from UAE to have three of the top five, and all of them level on the same time, even though we're still early in the race. Did someone say "power struggle"? 😈 (Yes, Matt Stephens just did.)
Gaudu is far from out of it in 6th place, 16 seconds down on Vingegaard.

MATTEO JORGENSON: WE HELD BACK A LITTLE IN THE FIRST HALF
I think we maybe misunderstood the wind from the recon - we thought it was tailwind going out, so we held back a little bit. But also we always plan to go a little faster in the second half. If we went faster in the second half with the tailwind it makes sense to come back, but not enough for the wind. We came to win the stage, and definitely didn't meet that objective but seven seconds is not going to be the winning margin in Madrid. I think we'll analyse today and see where we are. We have some things to work on but I felt personally pretty good.
17:32
GROUPAMA FDJ FINISH IN 9TH PLACE
Plus 24 seconds says the clock, which means he loses 16 seconds to Jonas Vingegaard. We'll wait to see where that puts him relative to the rest. That's either a very good recovery, or the timing was wrong.
17:29
UAE EMIRATES WIN STAGE 5!
Groupama FDJ are still several hundred metres from the finish. What will be the damage ultimately to David Gaudu's GC challenge?
17:26
VISMA HAVE LIMITED THEIR LOSSES
And battled back in those final kilometres, crossing the line in 2nd place, seven seconds behind UAE Emirates. It looks as if Jonas Vingegaard is going back into red, even though he won't care all that much.
17:24
BAD FOR VISMA, WORSE FOR GROUPAMA FDJ
I can only conclude that the wind has picked up in that middle sector, because Gaudu's team has gone through in 15th place, having swung 20 seconds away from the race lead.
17:23
UAE EMIRATES GO QUICKEST
Marc Soler was wrestling his bike to stay in the wheels on the finishing straight, but what an excellent job that team has done. Nine seconds faster, we may be about to see a Spanish leader of the Vuelta.
17:20
VISMA-LEASE A BIKE SHIPPING TIME
Now 18 seconds behind Lidl-Trek at the second check, in 10th place. If they didn't have a camera on their bums, you'd think something had to have happened. Lidl-Trek are looking very happy in their Tissot chairs.
17:17
MATTEO SOBRERO HAS FINISHED THE STAGE
Remember, riders can drop off, but to continue the race, they need to complete the course, so that's good news.
17:15
GROUPAMA-FDJ IN THE BALL GAME
Seven seconds down on Ineos' best time, more relevantly just four seconds slower than Visma. It's all about pacing now. It's still looking good for Giulio Ciccone's Lidl-Trek. Could the Italian be a surprise new red jersey?
17:12
RED BULL JUST MISS OUT ON TOP SPOT
Eleven seconds down at the second split, they pulled back eight of them by the line. Great ride, especially considering the incident.
17:10
VISMA LEASE A BIKE SLOWER THAN INEOS AND UAE
But only by three seconds at check one. That tells us Groupama will need to be going very well to beat them.
17:08
UAE TEAM EMIRATES SECOND AT THE FIRST CHECK
Dead level with Ineos.

THE RED JERSEY IS ON HIS WAY
Whether or not he can hold on to rojo, and I think he's got a fighting chance, he has a terrible, terrible moustache.
17:05
MATTEO SOBRERO CRASHES IN THE RED BULL LINE
I'm not sure what caused it but it looked like a heavy hit. Somehow he managed to avoid taking anyone with him, and the remaining riders are going very strong and done well to keep it together.

IT'S TICKED AWAY FROM INEOS GRENADIERS
Second place, six seconds down on Lidl-Trek, Egan Bernal will have no complaints, but it won't be the race lead for him. It was that final part of the course that it ran away from them.
