ONE MORE DAY IN THE MOUNTAINS

1000m less climbing but about 40km less horizontal two. Don't tell me the Tour de France is over. I think tomorrow could be a cracker.

BEN O'CONNOR: I JUST DIDN'T WANT TO GET ROLLED
I felt much better today from the start. I was pretty active and the point when I realized I could have a shot was the top of the Madeleine, when Jonas and Poggy came across and I was still with them over the summit. It was the perfect opportunity to go in the valley. This is a climb I have some good memories on. I rode it for Felix Gall to the win, and it's sweet to do it again for myself. It's the biggest race in the world but it's for sure the cruellest. I wanted to have another victory for so many years. I've been fighting for thirds and fourths and come so close. I couldn't be more proud of myself and the boys they backed me every day. It's what the team needed and it's what I needed.
The valley was the perfect opportunity to take time - you're going to be smoked by Tadej and Jonas if you stay there, so it was worth a shot. The final climb was just waiting for the steepest part before we entered Courcheval. It was all about pacing and speed and typical time trial stuff. It's what I do best. It was nice to savour this one more than the last one. Once Rubio was gone I just didn't want to get rolled by the yellow jersey in the final 5ks. When I heard it was staying at three minutes I knew I was safe.

JONAS VINGEGAARD: THE TOUR IS NOT OVER
Today was a brutal day. Five hours in the saddle and I'm not sure I've ever done such a hard day in the Tour before. I said before the stage that it would be. This was a brutal stage. I felt good; the team felt good. We had big plans, obviously, to try to go early. We did and unfortunately I couldn't take any time on Tadej. But the team did amazingly today. I want to thank them. Everyone was 100% behind the plan and it gives me much motivation. I think it looked like we were pretty equal today - he took a few seconds in the end but the Tour is not over.

DID VISMA MESS UP?
The studio think not. "They threw the kitchen sink at them" says Matt White. "It didn't work out." On the other hand, my friend Tom texts to say he thinks Red Bull did drop the ball. Indeed Lipowitz didn't need to attack early on the Col de La Loze. He ended up going nowhere, then paid for his effort later. It might end up costing him a podium and the jersey.

ONLEY 22 SECONDS OFF THE TOUR DE FRANCE PODIUM
Forgive the bias, but hasn't he done well?

LIPOWITZ KEEPS THE WHITE JERSEY
He's lost 1'39 to Oscar Onley. It's so close for the podium.

VINGEGAARD CROSSES FOR THIRD
Onley 4th. How big will be the damage he's inflicted on Lipowitz?

POGACAR TRIES TO DISTANCE VINGEGAARD
And he does enough to put time into the Dane, coming past Rubio for second place and bonus seconds. In the end there was nothing Visma could do about the best bike rider in the world.

BEN O'CONNOR WINS STAGE 18!
The first non-European winner in this edition.

300M TO THE TOP: BEN O'CONNOR CAN AFFORD TO CRUISE TO THE FINISH
The fireworks we were promised from the yellow jersey fight haven't materialised, but it tells you how hard this race has been. They go under the flamme rouge as a trio.

900M TO GO: NOW VINGEGAARD GOES
Too little, too late? Pogacar follows, of course, but Onley isn't going anywhere either.

FLAMME ROUGE: O'CONNOR SITTING PRETTY
We've only seen his backside for a while, so I can't tell you how much pain he's wearing on his face, but he has plenty of time in hand and can afford to slide.
16:18
2KM TO GO: ONLEY GAINING 40 SECONDS ON LIPOWITZ
Not yet enough to move onto the podium, but he doesn't need to do it all today.
16:16
3KM TO GO: ROGLIC THE NEXT VICTIM
That's a surprise, but he has been riding hard since the start, let's not forget. He recovers enough to drag himself back as the group reaches the bike path.
16:12
4KM TO GO: KUSS AND JOHANNESSEN NEXT TO GO
Gall is fighting to keep on Roglic's wheel. He lost it briefly but dug deep. O'Connor has lost a few seconds, but he can afford this rate of attrition.

4.7KM TO GO: LIPOWITZ LOSES CONTACT
Oscar Onley is rock solid fourth in line. How much time will this cost the white jersey? Can Onley move up?

5KM TO GO: BEN O'CONNOR ONTO THE STEEP STUFF
Up to 15% gradient here, and you can see it from the angle of the crowds. He's holding firm but it will be, as Rob Hatch says, interesting to see what happens when the yellow jersey group reaches the same slopes. Narvaez is done. It'll be Adam Yates to launch Pogacar if he goes.

Is Pogacar about to bring the thunder?

7.5KM TO GO: LIPOWITZ BACK IN THE GROUP
Can he stay there? One eye on Onley now to see if he might be able to take advantage when the time comes.
