VOLLERING WINS GENERAL CLASSIFICATION WITH VICTORY ON FINAL STAGE
Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez) rode to an emphatic stage victory and a back-to-back general classification title on the final day of La Vuelta Femenina. In doing so, she created history for FDJ-Suez with their first-ever Grand Tour title in their 20-year existence.
Vollering bided her time to launch a final damaging attack within the final kilometre to power to the line solo, leaving Marlen Reusser (Movistar), Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx - Protime), and Cedrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly) to battle for the remaining places on Alto de Cotobello.
Both Vollering and former SD Worx team-mate Reusser appear to be thriving in their new teams this season, with the Movistar rider not only taking second place in the stage but also the same position in the general classification.
Swiss rider Reusser started the day third in the general classification, only one second behind Van der Breggen, but a strong final climb saw her create a gap and ride into the second place on the podium.
Third-placed Van der Breggen put in a valiant effort on the front for much of the final climb, but it was not enough to drop Vollering or Reusser.
Kerbaol retained her fourth place in the general classification from the start of the day after a strong ride to finish in the same place in the final stage.
Alongside the general classification, Vollering also took the Queen of the Mountains with 48 points and both mountain stages to her name at this year's La Vuelta Femenina.
Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) secured a third consecutive points classification, with two individual stage wins, also for the third year in a row, after starting the stage with it mathematically impossible for her to be overtaken if she finished the stage, and she even picked up some extra points with third place in the intermediate sprint.
