POGACAR MAKES MORE HISTORY AT IL LOMBARDIA
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) recorded a record-breaking fifth consecutive Il Lombardia title with another show of dominance.
Once Pogacar attacked his rivals with 36 kilometres remaining on the Passo Di Ganda climb the victory never looked in doubt.
This season, the Slovenian has won the world and European titles, three Monuments and the Tour De France.
The victory also matched Fausto Coppi’s record of five Il Lombardia wins, but was the first to win them in consecutive years.
Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) took the race to his rivals after attacking from the first kilometre to instigate the day’s breakaway and then going alone.
Simmons was eventually caught on the upper slopes of the Passo Di Ganda and passed by Pogacar on his way to glory.
Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) did not respond to Pogacar’s winning move but reached across to Simmons and distanced his opponents to finish runner-up.
Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling) stuck with Evenepoel the longest and hung on for third for his team’s first Monument podium.
Meanwhile, a valiant Simmons came home fourth after spending 241 kilometres on the attack.

‘BEST SEASON SO FAR,’ SAYS POGACAR
Tadej Pogacar says this is his "best season so far" after recording a fifth consecutive Il Lombardia victory.
He said: "To win five times in a row.
"Every time I start, I feel this race is really suited to me. Also at the same time I had such a good team around me that we can pull it off.
"A big thanks to all the team-mates. Domen (Novak) did a fantastic job and then Pavel (Sivakov) was also really impressive today.
"Then all the guys leading out on the final climb and protecting me from behind. It was top-class work and really impressive.
"Seven years in a row I say this is the best season so far, and again I can say that."

POGACAR WINS
It’s a familiar sight at Pogacar rolls into the finish celebrating.
Another piece of history for the Slovenian who becomes the first rider to win five consecutive Il Lombardia titles.
Despite being delayed on the final climb, Evenepoel is a clear second place and looks satisfied with that performance.
It is a huge moment for Storer who picks up his first Monument podium and Tudor Pro Cycling will also be delighted with that historic result for their team.
After an epic ride Simmons finishes a close fourth and salutes the crowd.

3 KM TO GO: EVENPOEL DELAYED BY MOTORBIKES
Pogacar is relentless as he powers up the final climb of Colle Aperto into Bergamo.
The crowd is three-people deep and full of admiration as the world champion extends his advantage out.
The mood of Evenepoel will not have been made better after being halted by the two leading motorbikes being brought to a stop in the crowd.
The Belgian loses a handful of seconds as he navigates them.

5KM TO GO: POGACAR STANDS ON THE VERGE OF HISTORY
Once again everybody knew what the Slovenian was going to do, but nobody could follow his stellar attack.
Pogacar is racing on the cobbles towards Bergamo and has the ascent of Colle Aperto to come shortly.
The 1.3-kilometre climb has an average of 7.4% which will be packed full of spectators.
Evenepoel is clear in second, while Storer is giving his all to hold onto third.
15:39
10KM TO GO: EVENPOEL LOOKS BOUND FOR SECOND
The Belgian could not have ridden better today. However, once again he is denied glory by a remarkable Pogacar performance.
Hitting the 10-kilometre to go mark Evenepoel is 1’10" behind the lone leader and Storer is losing further time at 1’24". A third place for Storer would be huge for Tudor and the Australian.
15:35
13KM TO GO: POGACAR WEAVES THROUGH CONES
It seems an added piece of fun for Pogacar who weaves in and our of cones which are placed in the middle of the road. Let’s hope those riders deeper in the red zone can also navigate the cones.
Pogacar leads by 1’16" from Evenepoel with Storer a handful of seconds further back. The chasing group of Del Torro and Simmons are 2’07" back.

19 KM TO GO: STORER LOSING GROUND ON DESCENT
The Tudor Pro Cycling could be on for a huge Monument podium for his team. However, Evenepoel is descending like a demon is pursuit of the lone leader.
The Belgian is 1’21" behind Pogacar, while Simmons is 1’47" back in fourth and is joined by Del Torro.
15:25
23KM TO GO: CARAPAZ CRASH
It looks a nasty crash for Richard Carapaz who was in the fifth group on the road. He looks to have slid out on a wet patch of road.
It’s now the fast run down towards the finish at Bergamo.
15:22
27KM TO GO: SIMMONS DROPPED BY CHASERS
A false flat and small rise following the Passo di Ganda is too much for Simmons as he is dispatched from the chasers.
A cruel blow for the American following his efforts today. Pogacar has a gap over 1’21" over Evenepoel and Storer.
15:18
31KM TO GO: SIMMONS CAUGHT BY CHASERS
It looks unlikely that UAE will record a one-two this afternoon as Del Toro is the first to crack.
Then just over the top the chasers catch Simmons. Evenepoel immediately attacks but looks to have left it too late as Simmons and Storer scramble to hold the Belgian’s wheel over the top.
32KM TO GO: SEIXAS DROPPED FROM CHASING GROUP
The chasers are 1’01" behind and are closing down on Simmons.
Evenepoel continues to drive the pace of the chasers and Paul Seixas (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) is distanced.
Del Toro and Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling) are currently with Evenepoel in the battle for the podium positions.
15:10
33KM TO GO: POGACAR TAKES LEAD
The world champion gives Simmons a look and then takes the lead. The American has three kilometres remaining of the climb to hang onto the world champion.
Pogacar waits for a steep section and his pace is too much for Simmons and the Slovenian is alone.

38 KM TO GO: POGACAR GIVES MAJKA SALUTE
UAE gained back control of the peloton on the lower slopes of Passo Di Ganda.
Rafał Majka is pacing the peloton in the final effort of his career, while Isaac del Toro is also lurking behind his team leader.
Adam Yates is a little further back. Majka is given the nod by Pogacar and gives a final turn before being given a salute by his leader.
14:53
40KM TO GO: PASSO DI GANDA IS HERE
This is the point where pre-race favourites thought that the race would be decided. Simmons hits the slopes with a 2’38" gap on the peloton.
The narrow road at the bottom of the climb will string out the bunch, while Simmons will have to dig deep to survive the next 9.3 kilometres.
There is a huge fight in the peloton for position as Remco Evenepoel is brought to the front. Suddenly Pogacar looks out of position.
