STAGE 4 PREVIEW
A short stage with an uphill finish, the first day in Italy on Tuesday looks like one the sprint teams might leave well alone. That means it could be the first true breakaway stage of the race. XDS-Astana will need to be watchful, because there will be quite a few strong riders looking to get up the road. There are several strong riders who have, deliberately or not, lost a lot of time in the opening stages, and they could well be interested. Felix Lowe will be here to report on every minute of the action.

PAUL MAGNIER SPRINTS TO SECOND STAGE WIN IN BULGARIA, THOMAS SILVA SAFELY HOME IN THE MAGLIA ROSA
Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) came off the wheel of Lidl-Trek’s Jonathan Milan in the closing metres to snatch a second Giro d’Italia stage victory from the first three, ending the Bulgarian Grande Partenza with the points jersey secure on his shoulders.
The Frenchman took advantage of the Italian’s early launch, gliding round him just before the line. Magnier immediately raised his fist in celebration, lowering it again until the replay showed he had won it by more than half a wheel.
Despite seeming all but certain the stage to be decided by a sprint finish for most of the day, the three-rider breakaway held out until inside the final kilometre. Three riders, KOM Diego Sevilla, his Polti VisitMalta team-mate Alessandro Tonelli and Manuele Tarozzi of Bardiani CSF were the only riders invested in the break. They were allowed to escape quickly at KM0 but were allowed no more than a three-minute lead, with the gap remaining closer to two for most of the 175km stage. The Polti riders’ primary goal was adding to their lead in the mountains competition, and this was achieved with relative ease over the only climb of the day, the 9km long, mid-stage category 2 Borovets Pass.
The bunch was content to allow the breakaway to hang out off the front, even granting them a free 30 seconds late on, as it appeared as if they may be reeled in a little earlier than the collective cared for. XDS-Astana appeared keen to keep the trio out front at least as far as the Red Bull sprint. Coming 16km from the finish, had Tudor Pro Cycling’s Florian Stork - in second place overall, just four seconds down - taken the six bonus seconds, he likely would have stolen the maglia rosa as well.
This tactic played into the breakaway, who pushed on and cooperated as long as possible. A headwind in the closing five kilometres also deterred a number of teams from taking up the chase. The trio made it under the flamme rouge with the peloton breathing down their necks, with one final left turn to go, only getting swamped 500m from the line. Dylan Groenewegen’s Unibet Rose Rockets were giving him the perfect long lead-out, but their plans were dashed by Milan’s decision to go early. Magnier leapt on the wheel, leaving it as late as he could to launch an immaculate sprint and perfectly timed throw for the line. Groenwegen was a close third place, his best Grand Tour stage result since the 2024 Tour de France.

DIEGO SEVILLA THE KING OF THE MOUNTAINS BY 30 POINTS
With only one category 2 climb on the course on Tuesday, he can keep that jersey at least until the end of Wednesday's Stage 5.

PAUL MAGNIER NOW WITH A COMMANDING LEAD IN THE MAGLIA CICLAMINO
He now holds a 41-point margin over Jonathan Milan, who leapfrogs Tobias Lund Andresen into second.

THOMAS SILVA PRETTY IN PINK
Another day in the maglia rosa at least for the Uruguyan, who finished in 60th place, just behind ihs XDS-Astana team-mate Alberto Bettiol. The only changes in the top 10 are Martin Tjotta swapping places with his Uno-X Mobility team-mate Johannes Kulset, Enric Mas (Movistar) jumping seven places to ninth, and Lennert van Eetvelt (Lotto-Intermarche) slipping one to 10th.

A CLEAR VICTORY FOR PAUL MAGNIER
Not quite as close as it looked in real time. This boy's the real deal.

PAUL MAGNIER: I CELEBRATED BUT THEN I WASN'T SURE
I dreamed about two stages, and it was the goal to go for the stage again. The team did an amazing job again, controlling the day and then we had the plan to really be in position with 1k to go. This is what we did. I'm not really sure how I won the stage, but I celebrated and then I say 'oh, I'm not sure' but in the end I won, so I'm really happy. I have to say I feel really good, and I can be with the best sprinters in the world, so I can enjoy this moment. When we arrive in Italy we will make a plan for another stage.
15:29
PAUL MAGNIER WINS STAGE 3!
He punched the air but we couldn't be sure he took it. The side-on slo-mo replay confirmed he took it from Dylan Groenewegen, letting Jonathan Milan start his sprint early and then coming off the Italian's wheel. Groenewegen was third, having had the perfect lead-out. The Dutchman could have done without Milan going long and coming over the top.
15:26
FLAMME ROUGE: NOW THEY'RE MOTORING
Soudal-Quickstep really upped the pace there. The sprint trains are winding it up, but the break has held on inside the final K. Tarozzi is riding for his life.
15:25
2KM TO GO: STILL 17 SECONDS TO THE BREAK
Even as Lidl-Trek drive the bunch along at 55kph.
15:24
3KM TO GO: STILL THE BREAK SURVIVES!
Too much looking around behind, none of the sprint teams really taking responsibility. Dare the breakaway hope?
15:20
5KM TO GO: LIDL-TREK, MOVISTAR AND BARDIANI TAKING IT UP
On this very wide highway. The bunch can see the break but they're still about 16 seconds ahead. The wind is coming from the front, which is why no-one really want to be up there. The safety zone is set at the 3km mark today, which means any incidents inside any rider who suffers an accident or mechanical will be awarded the same time as the group they were in.
15:19
7.6KM TO GO: TIMO DE JONG SLIDES OUT
That looked a bit uncomfortable, but he's back on his feet already. Fortunately he only took himself out.
15:16
10KM TO GO; 23 SECONDS AS THEY ENTER THE OUTSKIRTS OF SOFIA
Job almost done for the riders charged with bringing the break back. They'll shortly hand over to the sprint trains.
15:12
13KM TO GO: TAROZZI TAKES THE RED BULL KILOMETRE
But he's made to work for it, with Sevilla running him close. Robbie McEwen wonders why there wasn't some agreement there, but I'm less surprised. The gap had fallen to 30 seconds, and while they could look to keep the cohesion intact for as long as possible, whether it ended there or a couple of kilometers later really makes no difference.
15:04
20KM TO GO: THE GAP'S GONE BACK OUT TO A MINUTE
At this rate, the answer to my previous question is going to definitively be 'no'. This will suit Astana perfectly well, but what have Tudor been doing? They could, I suppose, try putting him into the sprint but that's much riskier. Maybe they just didn't fancy it, but why wouldn't you? Obviously it would have been difficult to orchestrate, but how many chances do you get to lead a Grand Tour?
14:51
30KM TO GO: COULD TUDOR TRY TO TAKE PINK TODAY?
Four seconds down, Florian Stork could take the six seconds from the Red Bull kilometer (and have Silva finish nowhere) and move into the maglia rosa. Astana will need to be vigilant.
