LUKE PLAPP: IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING
It’s pretty crazy - I still can’t believe it to be honest. I feel like it’s been a long time coming. I’m always targeting the Aussie summer, and just never been able to make a result happen in Europe. Last year I got so close in the Giro so many times. For today to happen is so, so special. We marked it as a stage for a few weeks now and this morning on the bus we decided to make it happen. It’s a dream come true. That was unbelievable, the fight to get into the breakaway. It just kept going and going. There was one point there when I was following Wout and was almost dropped myself and then gave it one more chance to make it in there. There was a massive group that made it, but it was all worth it. To have Koen (Bouwman) with me as well.
On why he attacked the break when he did:
I knew I couldn’t beat any of them in a sprint so I knew I had to go pretty early. The way the racing’s been going this year, the long moves have been really successful so that was in the back of my mind. The first one to make a move always has the advantage. I just thought I’d give it a crack. To be honest I wanted a head start on the descent as well. To stay away to the finish is not what I expected.
On his difficult last year.
I think from the Olympics last year to wrist surgery in February and crashing in the first TT, it almost makes it all worth it. The lows in cycling are super super low and there’s a long time between highs, so to have a result like this is amazing.

DIEGO ULISSI IS THE NEW MAGLIA ROSA!
A bellow of delight from the man in his mid-30s, as he transforms his palmares in a stroke. That was quite the day of bike racing.
16:16
FORTUNATO AND ULISSI GATHER AROUND A SCREEN
Hoping, praying, the bunch will call it off. They've got about 1km to ride. Rob Hatch calculates it as 4'38 or more for Ulissi to take the jersey.
16:14
ULISSI POWERS ACROSS IN THIRD
He only gets four bonus seconds because Kelderman takes the six. Will it be enough?
16:13
LUKE PLAPP WINS STAGE 8!
We await the pink jersey fallout, but this is Plappy's day. Have we not been entertained?
16:12
FLAMME ROUGE: PLAPP PASSES UNDER THE KITE
He's going to be fine for the stage, 48 seconds to the good.
16:10
3KM TO GO: IT'S TOUCH AND GO FOR THE MAGLIA ROSA
It's under five minutes to Plapp, which means Ulissi has about five seconds in hand. I think the dream might be dying.
16:06
5KM TO GO: ULISSI NEEDS 3'59 TO TAKE THE JERSEY
Not factoring in bonuses. At the moment he's got about half a minute more than that over the bunch, who seem to be riding. Ulissi needs to hit all the way to the line.
16:04
7KM TO GO: LUKE PLAPP ONTO THE FINAL CLIMB OF THE STAGE
Gagliole is less than a kilometre in length but it's a real grind. "He's proved me wrong" says Sean Kelly, magnanimously.
15:59
10KM TO GO: ARRIETA BACK WITH ULISSI AND KELDERMAN
Sliding back to recover in the wheels, if they let him, and if he can hold it. A few choice words clearly come from the Italian, who is now the Giro leader on the road, by 20 seconds from his team-mate Fortunato. If the race were to end now, Primoz Roglic would be in 3rd by 42 seconds.
15:52
15KM TO GO: PLAPP HAS PULLED MORE TIME OUT ON ARRIETA
Who may have had hopes of getting across, but those have surely now been dashed. Ulissi took two bonus seconds at the Red Bull kilometre, which matters rather more at this point, you'd argue. One more classified climb remaining which, although pretty steep, is also short. Jensie thinks Plapp's got this. So do I.
20KM TO GO: FORTUNATO BACK IN THE VIRTUAL LEAD
UAE seem to have eased off the pressure on Red Bull from the bunch, and one way or another it looks like Italy are going to get their first maglia rosa in four years. In the Red Bull kilometer Igor Arrieta wants to deny Diego Ulissi a few seconds and hits out from that group.
15:37
24KM: NOW OVER A MINUTE FOR PLAPP
"It's looking very good for him" says Sean Kelly, who didn't think he should have gone when he did. But the three riders behind are faring worse than him. "He should be able to hold out all the way."
15:31
30KM TO GO: 41KPH AVERAGE FOR FOUR HOURS OF RACING
Just passed the 240 minute mark and Plapp is looking very good for his 40 second lead, with Arrieta, Kelderman and Ulissi chasing. Finally we see Plapp's team car allowed to move up to him. Get those carbs down you, son. Could have been earlier, you'd think.
15:27
33KM TO GO: LUKE PLAPP 35 SECONDS TO THE GOOD
He's in full time trial mode on this pedaling descent. It's getting hot, as he asks the TV bike pilot for a drink, and is passed one.
15:20
40KM TO GO: GETTING INTERESTING IN THE PELOTON
We haven't thought about those guys for a while, but Andrea Pasqualon (Bahrain Victorious) moved to the front to put some pressure on Red Bull. To what ends, it's hard to be sure, but it's reduced Primoz Roglic's support by a couple. UAE have since added to that firepower, but there's still a good five minutes 30 between the bunch and now Luke Plapp, the lone leader.
15:15
45KM TO GO: PLAPP OPENS A GAP
Maybe just wants to take a bit of a lead over the top and onto the descent, to limit the effects of his weaknesses. He looks great on a bike, steady as you like, which is especially apparent when you can readily compare it to the ungainly style of Arrieta.
15:11
46KM.5 TO GO: ARRIETA RE-JOINS OUR FRONT PAIR
And it won't be long before Luke Plapp pulls up to them too. 1.5km left of this climb, leaving one more uncategorized riser and a couple of uncategorized ones.
15:01
50KM TO GO: ULISSI AND KELDERMAN HEADING UP THE ROAD
The fatigue is being felt and the sorting is happening on the lower sections of this 6km Montelago climb. The neutral service flies past and Bardet knows it's now or never. I don't think he's got enough left.
