BRITAIN'S ANNA HENDERSON MOVES INTO MAGLIA ROSA AFTER BREAKAWAY VICTORY
Lidl-Trek’s Anna Henderson claimed her first individual World Tour victory and moved into the maglia rosa on Stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia Women after an impressive day in a two-woman breakaway.
After multiple attacks failed to stick, the breakaway was finally able to get away with around 40km to go when Henderson and Dilyxine Miermont (Ceratizit Pro Cycling) were allowed to open a gap of over three minutes at one stage.
Despite efforts from Iurani Blanco (Human Powered Health) to join the leaders, the duo’s partnership would see them stay clear and take a two-minute advantage into the final climb of the day, Aprica (12.9km at 3.8km, max 15%).
The climb highlighted weakness elsewhere, as Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike), Anna Van der Breggen and Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) struggled to hold onto the maglia rosa group, though the four-time champion eventually rejoined at the shallower gradients.
As if sensing her closest rivals distancing, it was eventually the maglia rosa herself, Marlen Reusser (Movistar), who attacked after having to chase moves from Katrine Aalerud (Uno-X Mobilty) and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal) in soggy conditions in northern Italy.
With the breakaway’s advantage weakening as each kilometre ticked by, the duo of Henderson and Miermont dipped under the flamme rogue with just 30 seconds buffer, which proved to be enough as the British rider, who finished sixth in Sunday's opening time trial, sprinted past her French counterpart to pick up her first individual Grand Tour victory.

LOOKING AHEAD TO STAGE 3
After her impressive victory this afternoon in Aprica, our new maglia rosa Anna Henderson will be hoping to hold onto it for a little longer and tomorrow might be the perfect stage to do so.
Whilst the stage begins with an ascent of Passo del Tonale, it's followed by a long descent through Val di Sole and Val di Non, with the conclusion looking to be a chance for the fast women of the bunch.

HENDERSON: I CAN'T BELIEVE IT
I can’t believe. As a team we made the plan this morning to be aggressive because we knew it would be a hard final, and we knew we had a really good team for the attacking.
I took the opportunity with about 40km to go, and they gave us 3 minutes and I knew once we had 2 minutes at the bottom of the climb, we could make it.
I just kept working and I can’t believe it. It’s my first world tour victory, my first individual grand tour victory, so I can’t be more thankful for my teammates.
We came here for stages and I’m so thankful to my teammates for supporting me in the breakaway, and I’m just beyond grateful and happy. I can’t believe it. I’m in shock.
I said to my boyfriend this morning that I had nothing to lose and I’ve been waiting all year to come fifth in the sprint and I wasn’t going to wait around and I just took the opportunity when I saw it and I can’t believe it came off."
