England white-ball captain Jos Buttler will be absent for England’s upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against the West Indies.
The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced that Buttler has suffered “a slight setback in his rehabilitation” while recovering from a calf injury and will not be back in time for the three-match series.
Despite the setback, the 34-year-old will remain part of the squad and is expected to feature in the five-match T20 series against West Indies that follows the ODI matches, but “only as he completes his recovery”.
It is the third calf injury Buttler has sustained since 2021.
Buttler has not played since the T20 World Cup in June and in his absence, all-rounder Liam Livingstone, who was part of the England squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2022, will step in and captain the side for the first time.
The reshuffle has seen keeper-batter Michael Pepper called up, with the Essex player in line to earn his first cap.
Livingstone’s promotion to captain signifies a remarkable turnaround for the 31-year-old, who was only called up to the ODI squad to play Australia last month following Buttler’s injury.
The squad are set to travel to the Caribbean early next week, with Buttler staying behind to continue rehabilitation before joining up with his teammates in Barbados following the ODI series.
The ECB has also confirmed that two further players are set to be added from the Test squad currently in Pakistan.
- New Zealand win first ever T20 World Cup title with commanding victory over South Africa
- Ali stars as Pakistan level series with 152-run win over England in second Test
