India piled misery on England on Day 2 of the one-off Test against England in Navi Mumbai, bowling the tourists out for 136 with Deepti Sharma taking five wickets. At stumps, India had extended their lead to 477 runs with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur still unbeaten on 44. When England bat on Day 3 they will be faced with the largest chase in women's Test history.

India in 'complete control' at stumps after 'utterly absorbing' day two in one-off England Test

England look set for certain defeat in the one-off Test, as India amassed a lead of 478 on Day 2 after the tourists fell to 136 all out.
To avoid defeat the tourists need to either chase down the biggest ever fourth innings target in women's Test cricket history, or bat for two days on a wearing pitch. Neither looks a remotely likely prospect.
Things started well as Sophie Ecclestone (3-91) wrapped up the tail with India adding just 18 to their overnight total ending on 428 all out.
With the exception of Nat Sciver-Brunt who hit 59, none of England's batters looked comfortable at the crease and, after India's seamers Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar dismissed Sophie Dunkley and Heather Knight respectively with balls nipping back off the surface, the spinners took control.
After a fantastic run out of Tammy Beaumont from Vastrakar, Deepti Sharma took 5-7 as England lost seven wickets for 28 runs, while Sneh Rana took the crucial wicket of Sciver-Brunt with a wickedly turning ball striking the off stump.
India opted not to enforce the follow-on and their batters came out looking to be positive on a spinning pitch and English spinning pair Charlie Dean (4-68) and Ecclestone (2-76) had them six wickets for 133 before skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (44 not out) and Vastrakar put on an unbeaten 53 for the seventh wicket to pile more misery on England.
Whether India declare overnight or allow Harmanpreet to attain a Test 50 the freak run out denied her in the first innings, the match will surely not see Day 4. The hosts will resume on 186-6 on Saturday.

Player of the Day - Deepti Sharma (India)

After hitting 67 in the first innings, when Deepti came onto bowl England had 100 on the board and it did not seem beyond imagination that they could at least post a competitive total if Sciver-Brunt got some support.
Three wickets later in the space off 12 balls, Danni Wyatt, Amy Jones and Ecclestone returned to the dug-out and England's hopes were extinguished.
The off-spinner finished with the incredible figures of 5.4-4-7-5.

Key Stats

  • 19 wickets in a day is the most in Women's Test cricket in India.
