The Los Angeles Lakers agreed a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night, landing five-time All-Star Luka Doncic and sending former No. 1 draft pick Anthony Davis to Dallas in exchange.
The stunning move saw Greg Anthony and Quentin Richardson on NBA TV "in shock", calling it "hard to fathom".
Doncic, last year's leading NBA scorer and second runner-up in MVP voting, led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season, where they fell to the Boston Celtics in five games.
He has earned five All-Star appearances since moving to the United States from Real Madrid in 2018, and has broken scoring records held by iconic players, including Tim Duncan, Jason Kidd, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan.
While the trade is yet to be made official, it is also reported to include Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris joining Doncic in Los Angeles, while Max Christie follows Davis to Dallas. The Lakers' 2029 first round NBA Draft pick also goes to the Mavericks, while the Utah Jazz land guard Jalen Hood-Schifino as a salary cap work-around.
Doncic has had something of a frustrating season in 2024/25, appearing on the injury report nine different times with calf, foot, wrist, knee, heel, and groin complaints. Despite those issues, he has averaged nearly 36 minutes per game and 28.1 points.
He is currently sidelined with injury but is expected to return to action in early February.
The Lakers currently sit fifth in the Western Conference, 10 games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder and three games ahead of the Mavericks. Looking ahead to the playoffs, the Mavs are the eighth seed, with the Lakers currently seeded fifth.
Doncic and Davis are set to face their former teammates on February 25 when Dallas travel to Los Angeles.
