After sharing the first two sets, Olympic gold medallists Brazil hit their stride, taking the third 25-22 and the fourth by an emphatic 25-16 margin.

France had to beat Italy and hope Brazil were convincingly beaten, but their slim hopes were extinguished although they will stay in Japan for the classification matches.

The basement boys from each group ended their campaign on a high note, as Czech Republic and Tunisia recorded their first wins of the second round against Germany and Puerto Rico respectively.

Brazil's reward for topping Group F is a semi-final match against Serbia-Montenegro, who finished with an identical 6-1 record after a straight-sets defeat to Poland.

The Poles await Bulgaria in the other semi, and look set to present formidable opposition after finishing the second group stage as the only unbeaten nation.

The semi-finals and classification matches take place on Saturday, with the final the following day.
