Despite leading for much of the race, Team GB lost their mixed triathlon title and took bronze in a photo finish in Paris.
Germany claimed victory with Laura Lindemann powering them to an impressive win.
USA’s Taylor Knibb reached the finish line narrowly ahead of Beth Potter to claim second place, as Great Britain were made to settle for third.
Mixed triathlon teams are made up of two men and two women and they each complete a short course consisting of a 300m swim, 8km bike ride and 2km run before tagging in their next team-mate.
Water quality issues in the Seine overshadowed the build-up to triathlon events at the Games, with the men’s competition postponed by a day during the opening week in Paris.
Concerns remained ahead of the mixed event, a statement said: “water quality levels at the triathlon venue have improved in recent hours” which allowed the competition to go ahead.
Belgium pulled its team out of the race after one of its competitors, Claire Michel, who competed in the women’s triathlon, fell ill.
Alex Yee led Team GB out fresh from his victory in the men’s individual competition, and he gave his team a three-second lead as he handed over to Georgia Taylor-Brown for the second leg.
France and New Zealand suffered early setbacks, with Hayden Wilde going down on his bike, and home favourite Pierre Le Corre riding into him.
An impressive swim and cycle from Taylor-Brown saw her increase the British lead to 14 seconds over the chasing pack - with Lisa Tertsch of Germany and Italy’s Alice Betto being the nearest challengers.
However, on the second lap of the run, Taylor-Brown was overtaken by Tertsch - who gave the German team a narrow advantage at the halfway stage.
On the third leg of the race, the Great Britain v Germany battle continued with Sam Dickinson and Lasse Luehrs putting a significant gap between themselves and the rest of the competitors.
After the pair traded positions during the cycle, Dickinson ran clear to give Beth Potter a five-second lead going into the final leg, and a 21-second advantage over Italy in fourth.
A strong swim from Potter kept her in the lead, but the cycle leg saw the feel of the race change.
As well as Laura Lindemann of Germany closing the gap, American Taylor Knibb produced an astonishing ride to make up an 18-second deficit.
As the trio transitioned for the final run, Lindemann looked strong, while Potter faded into third.
Heading into the final straight, Lindemann held her position to take victory, while a final burst from Potter saw her and Knibb cross the line together with a photo finish needed to confirm a silver for the USA, with Team GB taking bronze.
