Eugenie Bouchard suffered an early exit on the opening day of the grass-court season when she was beaten 6-2 6-0 by qualifier Elise Mertens at the Ricoh Open in s'Hertogenbosch.
The Canadian seventh seed, who reached the 2014 Wimbledon final, was broken three times by the Belgian, ranked 171st in the world, as she lost the opening set in 30 minutes.
The world number 46 could not mount a comeback as she soon trailed 3-0 after failing to hold on to her first two service games, before Mertens converted another break chance and then served out an unexpected comfortable victory.
