The native Californian had her chances in the first set, which included a breakpoint in the fifth game, but failed to take it. Hingis took advantage of the weakly serving Davenport and profited from the many unforced errors made by Davenport to take the first set.
The second set saw a completely different Davenport as the 29-yeard old blasted all over Hingis' serve, breaking all of the Swiss' service games. Davenport's serve also improved and she won the second set easily with 6-1.
Hingis did not let the defeat of the second set get to her and started fighting her way back into the match. Davenport did not play her best as she made a total of 42 unforced errors throughout the entire match and eventhough she broke the Swiss whilst she was serving for the match, one game later Davenport had to admit defeat.
Davenport was clearly struggling with a back injury but still gave credit to her long-time rival.
"I don't want to take everything from her," the American told reporters.
Hingis was thrilled with the victory after going into the match having lost eight of her last 11 meetings with the American.
"To beat Lindsay here in Indian Wells, it probably matters a little bit more than anything else," said Hingis, who faces Safina in the quarter-finals.
Safina gets first win against Myskina
Hingis now faces Dinara Safina next, who upset Anastasia Myskina earlier today. She showed no trouble getting past her fellow compatriot as she took the first set in just 23 minutes by breaking Myskina twice.
In the second set Myskina broke the serve of the 19-year old Russian only to be broken back immediatly. Safina was on a roll after that as she took the next 5 games to win the match. This was Safina's first big win against another Russian and Myskina lead the head to head 4-0.
