SWIATEK CANTERS TO QUICK-FIRE OPENING VICTORY
Iga Swiatek kicked off her bid for a second WTA Finals title with a statement win over Madison Keys.
In a battle of the 2025 Australian Open and Wimbledon champions it was the latter who came out on top courtesy of a 6-1 6-2 victory in just one hour and one minute.
Keys, who was featuring at the event for the second time in her career and the first since her debut in 2016, looked nervy and rusty throughout.
The American threw in 15 unforced errors in the opening stanza, compared to Swiatek’s tally of two, to allow the 2023 champion to comfortably claim a first-set breadstick in just 23 minutes.
A trio of breaks opened the second set with Keys trying to show more resilience. However, Swiatek pulled free again as the seventh seed’s unforced error count began to spiral out of control once more.
The world No. 2 was far too solid and consistent and easily opened the Serena Williams Group with a victory, leaving Keys with it all to do in her matches against Amanda Anisimova and Elena Rybakina.
