Iga Swiatek v Elena Rybakina result - Rybakina beats world No. 2 in three sets to take control of Serena Williams Group at WTA Finals

Both Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina came into this match unbeaten, but it is the latter who now has control of the Serena Williams Group at the WTA Finals in Riyadh with two wins from two.

Swiatek made the stronger start, breaking Rybakina's first service game and going on to take the opening set 6-3.

But then Rybakina found some confidence, her forehand started to find the line and her serve became more and more of a weapon.

The pressure told on Swiatek, who coughed up 19 unforced errors in the second set as Rybakina took it 6-1.

Rybakina started fast in the third set as well and never let up, leaving Swiatek with a mountain to climb.

And instead of gaining any sort of foothold, Rybakina took it 6-0, to bagel Swiatek as she closed out the win in one hour and 37 minutes.

Swiatek will not be happy with her final tally of 42 unforced errors to just 12 winners, and knows she will need to improve before playing Amanda Anisimova in the final round of games.

Rybakina, meanwhile, could qualify for the semi-finals on Monday depending on the result of the second match between Anisimova and Madison Keys later on.

"It is always tough to play against Iga, she brings so much intensity and I started a little slow," admitted Rybakina in her on-court interview.

"In the second set, I stepped in and played better each point. Very happy with the performance.

"Mentally, I am happy I stayed focused no matter [what], even in the first set. Once, I got some confidence and everything was going my way, so I hope to continue this form in the rest of the tournament.

"I have been playing really well in the last few weeks."

What a comeback from Rybakina.

She swiftly flies to 40-0, misses her first serve but wins it with a second serve ace!

One fist bump to the crowd, and a handshake as Swiatek finds herself bageled at the end there.

What a scoreline... What a result.

Oh dear.

This set has unravelled rather quickly now.

Rybakina was always a dangerous player - her Wimbledon win showed the world that.

She has struggled with some illnesses and injuries of late, but does always have the potential to do this to the top players... And Swiatek just does not have an answer.

Swiatek is starting to look a little... Downbeat out there.

Rybakina races to a 40-0 lead with some huge serves, some huge forehands and is just looking so, so confident right now.

She holds thanks to a forehand on the line winner for a 4-0 lead in the decider.

Swiatek is running out of time here.

Uh oh.

Swiatek starts the game well, but is soon pegged back. Rybakina's error count is lower than the first set, Swiatek's undoubtedly higher.

Rybakina cannot get her return into play at 30-40, but she gets a second break point chance after another error from the Polish player.

Swiatek misses her first serve, going down the middle again...And then she goes long.

And it is two breaks for the world No. 6.

Swiatek has lost nine of the last 10 games...

Rybakina consolidates the break despite a double fault out there.

She is playing really well, forcing the errors now from Swiatek who looks a little lost out there.

These two went to three sets at Roland Garros earlier this year, Swiatek winning 7-5 in the decider.

But to do likewise, she needs to stop the run of games to her opponent.

Swiatek is serving first here.

She has stopped the flow of errors finally, but cannot do anything about Rybakina's power once her opponent gets her forehand going.

40-15 turns to deuce, Swiatek gets another game point... But the errors return. A backhand goes wide, then Rybakina's return lands at her feet and Swiatek cannot dig the ball out.

Break point to Rybakina, she gets into the point, gets Swiatek on the run - and the ball finds the net.

Break!

Ouch. This is not good reading.

Swiatek hit 19 unforced errors in that set, to just four winners.

Rybakina was more steady, her four winners accompanied by 10 unforced errors.

She does need to improve her first serve though, Rybakina landing just 52% of hers there.

The errors keep flowing here, Swiatek sending a forehand long.

A short ball is smashed away by Rybakina, and she gets to 40-0.

But then comes a big double fault. Is Rybakina feeling the pressure?

No - next time around, Swiatek goes very, very wide with a backhand and the set goes to Rybakina!

Rybakina really has stepped up her game out there, and now she has Swiatek in trouble again at 30-30.

But once again, the world No. 2 gets herself out of trouble with a big forehand of her own.

But the backhand goes into the net as the game goes to deuce.

Not much from these two out there in terms of visible emotion as both seek out the other's weaknesses.

The battle of the forehands goes to Rybakina, who gains a break point.

And Swiatek goes long! Five errors and Rybakina is now two breaks to the good.

This game is not as simple for Rybakina. A double fault does not help either.

But as the match approaches the hour mark, a big first serve gets the former Wimbledon winner to 40-30.

The next serve is not good enough and Swiatek is all over it, putting the pressure on Rybakina who cracks and drills one wide.

Another first serve goes missing, but Rybakina seals the game with a huge forehand winner for a 4-1 lead.

This is a better response from Swiatek.

Some big, accurate serving gets her to 40-0, before Rybakina hits a stunner of a forehand cross court that Swiatek can only just get a racquet on.

The final return goes wide, and Swaitek holds to 15.

Swiatek swings and misses in the first rally, taking out some of her frustrations on the ball there.

But she can do nothing about Rybakina's huge serving for the rest of the game.

A hold to love, break consolidated and a 3-0 lead for Rybakina in the second set.

We have a match on our hands!

Like the first set, Rybakina gets an opening in Swiatek's first service game.

The two trade blows to get to 30-30, and then Swaitek double faults as she did also in her first service game in the opening set.

And Swiatek goes with the body serve at 30-40, Rybakina reads it, gets a return into play and her opponent finds the net.

Swiatek looks very frustrated to have coughed up a break there.

The second set begins with more of the same. When Rybakina lands her first serve she is on top in the point, especially if she can land a big forehand.

But Swiatek is proving a nuisance out there, running plenty of balls down.

Rybakina pulls out some big serves later in the game, and holds to 30. A better start to the second set for the world No. 6.

Rybakina has headed off court, which gives us a moment to look at the stats. And Swiatek then follows, so we have a brief respite here after a fast first set.

Swiatek won 90% of the points behind her first serve, hitting five winners to her six unforced errors.

Rybakina hit more winners - 10 - but she also hit 17 unforced errors. Ouch.

Swiatek makes a good start serving for the set, drawing the error from her opponent.

She does so again, as Rybakina just goes fractions long with her return.

But at 40-15 with two set points, a return bounce mid-court and Swiatek steps up with plenty of time and... Misses it wide. Interesting.

No response there. But on the second set point, Swiatek goes down the T on serve, it is un-returnable and she takes the first set 6-3 in 36 minutes.

Another tight game, but Rybakina does come out on top to force Swiatek to serve for the set.

Rybakina's serve is getting her out of trouble today - her movement cannot compete with Swiatek's once they get into a rally.

Just 26 minutes on the clock here, as Swiatek makes a rare error to give her opponent half a chance. But at 15-30, Rybakina thumps a forehand long.

The next return goes long as well to bring up game point, something Swiatek is heard yelling at as she issues the Polish equivalent of 'c'mon'.

And a big serve closes out the game for the Polish player. She is one game away.
