Emma Raducanu 'excited' to work with Rafael Nadal's former coach Francisco Roig ahead of US Open

British No. 1 Emma Raducanu has spoken about having Spanish coach Francisco Roig join her coaching team on a full-time basis. Roig was part of the set-up that helped Rafael Nadal to win 22 Grand Slam titles and will now guide Raducanu through the Cincinnati Open before she embarks on her quest to claim her second US Open trophy at Flushing Meadows.

Emma Raducanu has taken on Rafael Nadal's former coach Francisco Roig, and is "excited to have him on my side" as she prepares for the US Open.
The 22-year-old British No. 1 added the Spaniard to her coaching set-up after working with Mark Petchey on an informal basis since March, as she heads into the Cincinnati Open before the final Grand Slam of the season.
"He's obviously got a bank of experience and I'm very excited to continue working with him and to have him on my side," Raducanu told Sky Sports.
Roig helped Nadal's uncle Toni coach the star to 22 Grand Slam victories while working together between 2005 and 2022.
He most recently worked with Matteo Berrettini before signing on to help Raducanu until the end of 2025, starting with her first task in Ohio.
"It's going really well," Raducanu said. "It's my second day with [Roig] here, but I did a few days in London before I came out here."
Despite being knocked out in round three at Wimbledon, Raducanu had a good run of form under Petchey, reaching the Citi Open semi-finals and the quarter-finals at Queen's and the Miami Open.
Petchey was unable to take on a full-time role with the player and highlighted the need for her to secure a permanent coach, which she has struggled to find in recent years.
Raducanu will face either the British No. 2 Katie Boulter or Serbian Olga Danilovic in her first match at the Cincinnati Open after receiving a first-round bye at the WTA 1,000 event.
