Iga Swiatek reached her first Wimbledon final after storming to a convincing win over Belinda Bencic on Centre Court. The Polish star has excelled on the iconic clay courts of Roland-Garros in recent years, winning four of her five Grand Slam titles there. However, she has struggled to transfer that success to SW19. Iga Swiatek revealed that she is enjoying playing on grass for the first time in her career after reaching the final of Wimbledon with a convincing 6-2 6-0 triumph over Belinda Bencic on Centre Court.
Swiatek has struggled to transfer her fantastic French Open form to the grass courts of SW19 in recent years, with four of her five Grand Slam triumphs coming at Roland-Garros.
The Pole has revealed that she is feeling much more at home on the surface this year, and she impressed as she dispatched the world No. 35 in straight sets to reach the final for the first time.
Swiatek will now face Amanda Anisimova in Saturday's final after the American defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Thursday's early match on Centre Court.
"Honestly I never even dreamed that it was going to be possible for me to play in the final so I’m just super excited and just proud of myself," she told the BBC.
"Tennis keeps surprising me, I thought I lived through everything even though I’m young.
"I thought I'd experienced everything on the court.Â
"I didn’t experience playing well on grass so that’s the first time, and I’m super excited and enjoying it.
"Every point is different and every match I need to adjust my game, but for sure, I feel like I improved my movement, and I’m serving really well and I feel really confident.
"So I’m just going for it, and it’s working so I will keep doing that."
Swiatek made a sensational start to proceedings, winning the first three games of the opening set to cruise into a 3-0 lead.
The match was then paused temporarily while security staff dealt with a medical issue in the crowd.
However, that did not stop Swiatek's momentum, and when play resumed the Pole capped a superb passage of tennis with a break in the eighth game to move one set for the final.
