Federer's great rival, the second seed and 2006 runner-up Rafael Nadal, has a tricky opener against Mardy Fish of the USA, while the third-seeded Andy Roddick will play Justin Gimelstob in an all-American first round match.

Britain's number one and two have tough openers. Eighth-seeded Andy Murray - yet to confirm his participation in the tournament due to a wrist injury faces Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador.

Lapentti, a former world number six, is currently ranked 63 and is more at home on the slower claycourts, although he did make the quarter-finals in SW19 in 2002.

The Ecuadorian famously beat Greg Rusedski on the grass at Wimbledon in a Davis Cup tie back in 2000.

Meanwhile, the out-of-form Tim Henman drawn against 25th seed Carlos Moya of Spain, a dangerous veteran but another player who favours clay.

British number three Alex Bogdanovic, who was knocked out of the third round of the Artois Championships by Roddick, will meet big-serving Chris Guccione of Australia.
