Wimbledon 2024 semi-final result: Novak Djokovic beats Lorenzo Musetti to set up a re-match of the 2023 final with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz

Nole leads the match-up 3-2 and has won the last two encounters since losing in SW19 in five last year.

Djokovic has claimed his 97th career Men’s Singles match win at Wimbledon, surpassing Roland Garros (96) for the outright most he has recorded at a single ATP-level event.

Djokovic has reached 6th consecutive Men’s Singles final at Wimbledon, matching Borg (6, 1976-81), only Federer (7, 2003-09) has made more finals in consecutive editions of the event in the Open Era.

The Serb bites back from 0-30 and then survives two break back points before serving it out on a fourth match point.

The 24-time major winner is now one match away from a record-equalling eighth men’s title in SW19 after edging out an impressive Musetti in two hours and 48 minutes.

The 37-year-old will now face a re-match of last year’s final against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

That is a phenomenal escape!

Musetti looks done at triple match point down but plays aggressive, proactive tennis and claws his way back to hold from deuce with a rasping forehand that clips the tape on its way over.

Djokovic will now reset and try to serve it out.

Musetti can’t quite put a run together on the return.

He’s still producing moments of genius with a superb dropper catching Nole cold.

It’s not enough to knock the Serb out of his stride and he pulls clear from 30-30 to move within a game of the final.

Djokovic challenges a slice that looked in and there are ironic cheers from the Centre Court crowd as the Hawkeye image appears on screen.

The Serb looked like he knew it dropped in and the video proves it.

Musetti doesn’t waste any more time beyond that as he chalks up a comfortable game to 15.

Musetti gracefully despatches a backhand volley but unfortunately for him it’s all in isolation as Novak fires down a plethora of big, first serves, gliding to the net to swish away a couple of winners and easily hold to 15.

We are heading into now-or-never territory for the Italian.

There’s a tech failure that means Djoker’s challenge on a shot called out can’t be shown on the screen.

There’s a delay as a result and when the umpire sheepishly explains it to Nole he can’t help but laugh.

The game finally continues and Lorenzo hangs tough with a fine wide serve to stay in contention with a hold to 30.

There’s an initial lull from Djokovic as back-to-back double faults give Lorenzo a glimmer at 30-30.

Djokovic duly snuffs out the hope with two exceptional forays to the net to polish off a couple of S+Vs and maintain his advantage.

Lorenzo’s head could easily drop here but he keeps pushing hard and a clutch serve helps him on to the board from 30-30.

Lorenzo continues to battle hard, but like so many before him, he is usually second best on the key points.

This time Djoker bamboozles him with a feathered crosscourt dropper to consolidate via a tricky game to 30.

That is a dagger to Musetti’s heart!

The Italian has played some fabulous tennis today but is two sets … and now a break down.

Djokovic can sense a chance to pull clear as he refuses to allow the No.25 seed a hold from deuce and an arrow of a backhand pass to conclude an all-court point seals the break in real style.

Djokovic hammers away a smash and secures the breaker by a 7-2 scoreline to move to within one set of a re-match of last year’s final against Carlos Alcaraz.

The seven-time champion is in the box seat as he goes into 'lockdown mode' and lures the errors off his opponent to snare two mini breaks.

Musetti hits one of the best points you'll see with a forehand on the run past the net posts that sees the chalk of the line explode into the air and he's still in the hunt at the change of ends.

Musetti wins one of the points of the match as he bewilders Nole with some devilish slice before a lovely lob is finished off by a clinical smash.

It’s 30-15 and the Serb is left gulping in the air and yet he still recovers to force a set point.

Musetti survives when a lob drops long and he scurries through deuce to take us into a what is surely a crucial breaker.

Novak is briefly on the ropes as a forehand drive volley slams into the net and is followed by another unforced error off the same flank.

Musetti’s eyes light up but he barely touches the ball again as the Serb lands aces 4,5 and 6 and a service winner to maraud out of danger with the most supreme serving.

Lorenzo stands firm and continues to show good speed around the court as he chases down a drop shot to glide a deep forehand down the line.

The slice approach was so effective against Taylor Fritz in the previous round and it has worked quite well here, as it lures another forehand error into the net from Nole to end a game to 15.
