Carlos Alcaraz had some fun with the Centre Court fans after he clinched a four-set victory over Daniil Medvedev as he looked ahead to the Wimbledon and Euro 2024 finals on Sunday.
The 21-year-old defending champion defeated fifth seed Daniil Medvedev fairly comfortably, 6-7(1) 6-3 6-4 6-4, to set up either a rematch of last year's dramatic final against Novak Djokovic or a clash with Italy's Lorenzo Musetti.
Alcaraz has been asked questions about Spain's progress at Euro 2024 throughout the tournament at the All England Club, and the subject came up again in his post-match interview with his country in the final against England.
The Spaniard prompted lighthearted boos from the Centre Court crowd as he talked of a "really good day for Spanish people" before diplomatically softening his statement.
"It is going to be a really good day for Spanish people as well with the Euro cup..." Alcaraz said before he paused for a chorus of boos and smiled.
"I didn't say Spain is going to win," he clarified. "I am just saying that it is going to be a really fun day!"
Shifting back to focusing on the final, he continued: "Obviously, it is going to be a very difficult match with Lorenzo and Djokovic playing great tennis. I am going to watch the match, and let's see who I am going to face on Sunday."
Alcaraz, who is aiming for a fourth Grand Slam title and second Wimbledon crown on Sunday, also reflected on his impressive victory over Medvedev.
"Different conditions, but happy with my performance today," he said. "He was dominating the match and playing great tennis with his serves. It was difficult for me and he tried to pull out all the shots.
"It was helpful to be up 2-1, and after that, I could enjoy the match. In general, I think I played a good match.
"I tried to play long rallies and tried to play to the net as much as I can. I tried to not play his game.
"There were a few points that were really long rallies, but I tried to play my own game. It was difficult to break the wall."
The Spaniard added a thought about being in the Wimbledon final once more after overcoming Djokovic in last year's showpiece.
"I feel like I am not new any more," he said. "I know how I feel before the final, I have been in this position before - I will try to do the things that I didn't do last year and be better. I will also try the things that went well."
