Andy Murray produces winning return in interview: 'David Beckham isn't royal, is he?

Rather than push on with questions about the British number one's performance levels in a 6-4 7-5 6-4 win over Canada's Vasek Pospisil on Centre Court, the inquisitive Richardson wanted to know what Murray felt about playing in front of Prince William, his wife the Duchess of Cambridge and former England football captain David Beckham.

It reached a juncture where the BBC man oddly implied that Beckham himself was a form of royalty.

"Is there any more pressure because of Royal spectators? David Beckham was here today," said Richardson.

"He wasn't a royal, was he?" said a perplexed Murray.

Richardson said: "I'll let you decide."

"It's great that they came along to support," said Murray with immaculate diplomacy.

We all know Auntie Beeb loves the Royals, but adding Becks to the list is probably pushing the blood line a bit far.

As always, plenty of people of Twitter were a bit dazed by such goings on with Richardson under as much fire as poor Pospisil during the match.

"I don’t know it all," Murray replied, "far from it, but I don’t see why I should get told off for that. I fought as hard as I could, tried incredibly hard, chased every single ball down to the first to the last and I came through an incredibly tough match."
