World No. 1 Jannik Sinner thrashed Lorenzo Musetti 6-1 6-4 6-2 to book his spot in the semi-finals of the US Open. Jannik Sinner admitted he had to "take the friendship away" during his dominant quarter-final win over his fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti.
The pair are part of a golden crop of Italian talent and have won two Davis Cups together, but that was put to one side as the world No. 1 continued his relentless march through the draw on Arthur Ashe.
Having lifted the last three hard-court Grand Slams, Sinner’s 6-1 6-4 6-2 victory over Musetti was his 26th in a row on this surface at majors, putting him in a tie for third alongside Novak Djokovic and Ivan Lendl.
"We know each other very well," Sinner said following his two-hour victory. "We are from the same country. We have so many Italian players every time in the draw. I know here, there are many Italians, so it’s nice to play here.
"Obviously playing Davis Cup together and stuff like this, we have to take the friendship away for the match and then obviously when we shake hands, everything is fine.
"From my point of view, it was a great performance, very solid. Especially starting very, very well in the match."

Sinner has dropped just one set all tournament and dispatched Alexander Bublik for the loss of just three games in the previous round.
The Italian, looking to claim his third Grand Slam of the year following his triumphs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, picked up where he left off against Bublik.
He lost just nine points in taking the first set 6-1 and never looked back from there.

The second went with serve until, at 4-4, Sinner broke and held to move within a set of victory. And he sealed his progress in straight sets with the kind of ruthless efficiency he has become known for.
Sinner fired down 10 aces, 28 winners and made just 17 unforced errors in a sublime display and will face Felix Auger-Aliassime for a place in his fifth consecutive Grand Slam final.
