MATCH OF THE DAY
S. Williams (USA) [17] vs. C. Witthoeft (GER)
It's Day 3 of the US Open and the place to be is Arthur Ashe at 7pm local time. Serena Williams opens things up for the evening session against German Carina Witthoeft. Williams breezed through her opening match and already fans are starting to get excited about the possibility of the American winning her seventh title at Flushing Meadows.
Witthoeft shouldn't pose too many problems for the former world number one but it will still be a good indicator of where exactly Williams is. If she's at the top of her game expect this to be wrapped up quickly and efficiently. All signs continue to point towards a meeting with her sister in the next round.
POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE DAY
M. Raonic (CAN) [25] vs. G. Simon (FRA)
Round 2 means the chance for more shocks and there are a couple of intriguing match-ups in today's games. Steve Johnson will provide a tough test for Dominic Thiem and Camila Giorgi could shock Venus Williams but we're going for the second match on Court 5, Milos Raonic against Gilles Simon.
Raonic has never made it past Round Four of the US Open and he looks a shadow of the player that reached the Wimbledon final in 2016. There have been some encouraging performances this year but not enough to suggest that he will be able to comfortably dispatch the dangerous Simon.
BRITWATCH
All eyes will be on Andy Murray as he returns to court for the second match on Arthur Ashe to face Fernando Verdasco. Murray more or less came through unscathed against James Duckworth but Verdasco represents a bigger test for the recovering former world number one.
The Spaniard powered past compatriot Feliciano Lopez in the first round and will be hoping he can move Murray across the court to test that hip. The good news for Murray? He has won 13 out of the 14 matches he has played against Verdasco.
The only other Brit in action in the singles is Cameron Norrie who faces off against Dusan Lajovic. Both players came through their opening matches in four sets. This will be the first time they have met and should be a good test for the Brit.
