US Open 2017: Garbine Muguruza eases past Varvara Lepchenko in opener

Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza made a winning start to her US Open campaign with a 6-0 6-3 win over Varvara Lepchenko at Flushing Meadows.

The Spanish third seed has never gone beyond the second round of the US Open despite winning the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon last month.
She was never in any trouble on Arthur Ashe against the unseeded American Lepchenko as she completed the victory in one hour and three minutes, hitting 16 winners, more than double her opponent.
She will play the winner of the match between Duan Ying-Ying of China and American qualifier Claire Liu

Kvitota has reached the second round of all three grand slams she has played since returning to action in May, following a lengthy injury layoff.
"We had a few tough battles in the past, and I'm just happy to get through this tricky match," said Kvitova. who lost to the Serbian player as defending Wimbledon champion in the third round at the All England Club in 2015.

18th seed Caroline Garcia was also a comfortable victor, coming through with a 6-0 6-1 win over Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic in only 57 minutes.
Fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki capitalised on 41 unforced errors by Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu to cruise to a 6-1 7-5 win in their first round meeting at the U.S. Open on Monday.
