Any chance of reaching the world's top 100 players will have to wait another week, away from the major arenas and fans that have taken Murray to their hearts.
A second long match for Murray was expected, and the capacity Grandstand court crowd were not disappointed.
The 18-year-old from Dunblane recovered from two sets down, but cramps in his right leg at the start of the fifth set sealed his fate.
Clement, the fifth-best player in France, world number 91, rounded out a 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 2-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-0 victory that sets up a third round meeting with Nicolas Kiefer of Germany.
