However, the big serving Croat emerged victorious, winning 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-0 win.

The No 9 seed said: "The key today was finding my rhythm on serve. Jeremy played really well from second set on and I was having trouble with my movement after twisting my ankle.

"The first couple of games after doing that wasn't easy, it was causing trouble."

Cilic, who is coached by former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, said he "took a joker" from his mentor when he served four aces in the tiebreaker.

"I played great tennis in the fourth set. I'm happy about that,” he added.

Cilic will now face Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals after the 30-year-old eased past compatriot Benoit Paire in straight sets.
