Thousands of spectators and a number of school children enjoyed the beginning of the women's qualification under a cloudless sky.
American players Marissa Irvin, Shenay Perry and Teryn Ashley, the three top seeds in the 96-draw tournament, earned safe passage into the second of a three round event for 16 places in the main draw.
Bethanie Mattek, one of 12 Americans in the draw, defeated 23rd seed Marta Domachowska of Poland 7-5 3-6 6-3.
Three other seeds were also eliminated at the first hurdle.
Japan's Yuka Yoshida (13th seed), Austrian Sybille Bammer (18) and Argentina's Roberta Vinci (19).
Angelique Widjaja, who won the junior title at the French Open in 2002, eventually overcame Spain's Cristina Torrens Valero 7-6 6-3.
The end of the day saw the men take to the courts to begin the second round of their tournament.
Marcos Baghdatis defeated Chile's Hermes Gamonal 6-3 6-1.
The young Cypriot will have to beat France's Marc Gicquel for a place in the main draw, having defeated talented Chilean Julio Peralta 6-4 7-6.
