Jannik Sinner v Clement Tabur result – World No. 1 claims straight-sets win to begin bid for Career Grand Slam in style at 2026 French Open

Jannik Sinner got his bid to complete the Career Grand Slam at this year’s French Open off to a solid start with a dominant win over Clement Tabur.

The Italian was always going to be too strong for the world number 171 and cruised to a 6-1 6-3 6-4 victory in two hours and eight minutes.

The top seed broke to set the tone in the first game of the contest with the French wildcard surrendering the opener in just 30 minutes.

The 26-year-old Tabur was more competitive in the second stanza, but the world number one remained in control and served out to 15 to move two sets up in just over an hour.

The four-time Grand Slam champion played within himself in the third and fluffed four match points before finally securing a 30th win in a row when he served out the contest on his fifth.

Sinner will now face Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round.

Sinner put his hand to his face in shock as he fluffs a volley wide on his first match point and then blows two more before Clement poses the serve-out question with a forehand winner that snares another game and delays Jannik’s victory celebrations.

Sinner moves to within a game of victory, popping away a low, angled volley to finish off a clean hold with a lovely S+V routine.

Tabur turns to his team and clenches his fist as his majestic crosscourt pass finds the line and secures a hold from deuce.

It’s another game ticked off for the Frenchman who must have been privately concerned he could be completely annihilated here.

That hasn’t happened and he can be proud of the way he has acquitted himself so far.

Sinner dampens the home hopes of an unlikely switch in momentum as he polishes off a rapid love hold with a delightful crosscourt drop shot.

Tabur frustrates Jannik with a sumptuous drop shot that allows the Frenchman to charge forward and despatch a crosscourt backhand pass.

It sees him hit back from 0-30 down and he snares game point seconds later when he outfoxes his opponent with a cat a mouse at the net.  

Sinner responds with a missile-like return to make deuce but the yell of delight in the ensuing point is from Clement as Jannik flashes a forehand long.

The Italian doesn’t get another chance to swish his racquet as a timely, wide ace secures the game and the home support rejoice.

Rather surprisingly, Sinner blinks first in an intense backhand-to-backhand exchange.

The Italian re-focuses at Pulp and cannons down a huge serve, but he makes a poor decision with a dropper into the net to prolong the game at deuce.

Tabur almost snares the break point with a volley at the net but Jannik surges to his right to sizzle a crosscourt pass beyond the Frenchman.

The wildcard stays in the hunt with a stonking forehand down the line but Jannik retorts with a wide ace and another hefty delivery to consolidate via a long and winding road.

Tabur leaves himself with too much to do at 0-30 and then 15-40 when he double faults to hand over two break points.

A lovely volley saves one but he burrows a backhand into the net on the second to give the top seed the advantage in Set 3.

Sinner feels some rare heat on serve as Tabur unloads a beauty of a forehand to press at 0-30.

The Italian cleans the edge of the line with a forehand winner of his own and then booms an unreturnable strike to the opposite flank via an inside-out attempt to make Pulp.

The top seed is a tad frustrated by some line calls that go against him, particularly with an ace that was in but judged out, but he eventually gets the job done from deuce to get on the board and level.

Tabur lands a wide ace to seal a hold to 15 and kick off Set 3 on a massive high.

The French underdog may have had more joy in this second set, but the reality is that Sinner has been pretty comfortable and he serves out to 15 to remain on course for a routine passage into R2.

That’s a game that will live long in Tabur’s memory as he outplays Sinner in a couple of rallies to pose the serve-out question with a hold to 15.

The wildcard has been far more competitive in this second set.

Jessica Pegula has been pushed into a decider on Court Simonne-Mathieu by world number 83 Kimberly Birrell with the score now tied at 6-1 3-6 after the American fifth seed took the opener.

Over on Lenglen, men’s fourth seed FAA trails 4-6 6-4 4-6 2-1 against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier.

Sinner arcs down a wide kicker serve that evolves into an ace to seal a clinical love hold and move him within a whisker of a two-set lead.
