Murray closes in on world number one spot with Berdych win

Andy Murray survived a first-set scare to come through 7-6 (9) 7-5 against Tomas Berdych in the Paris Masters quarter-finals - and close in on the world number one spot.

Murray was 6-1 down in the first-set tie-break before clawing his way to 9-9 and eventually taking it 11-9.

He then broke Berdych at the start of the second, which he went on to win 7-5.

Murray now needs one more win to take the world number one spot from Novak Djokovic, who earlier lost his own quarter-final match in straight sets to Marin Cilic.

He takes on Milos Raonic in the semi-finals in Paris on Sautrday with the match starting at 3.30pm.

"There were a few net cords in the tie-break that went my way, and I think that helped," reflected Murray afterwards.

"Maybe a little bit before the match there were a few more nerves [knowing that the world number one spot was within reach], but once I was out there, no, it didn't really change much...Once I got on the court and I started playing, it didn't really bother me."
