Hewitt withdrew from Madrid Masters citing personnal reasons and has been hol-daying in Darwin with an Australian Rules football friend, this week.
On Friday, Clijsters announced on her official website that their planned February wedding had been called off and that the pair had split.
"He's angry, embarrassed, devastated, distraught - all of that stuff," a close friend of Hewitt's revealed.
"He's been kicked in the guts internationally and embarrassingly. He had a few signs but when it came, it came as a huge shock."
Media reports in Belgian had reported that Clijsters had cancelled her wedding dress weeks ago, while rumours in recent months have mentioned internal strife between the two players parents over the location of the wedding.
Hewitt's grandfather, Max Hewitt, said he was shocked when told the news on Friday night.
"It's a big surprise," he said.
"We're trying to find out what happened: we have no idea what went wrong."
Leo Clijsters, Kim's father has refused to comment on the break-up of the pair who first met at the 2000 Australian Open.
