HEWITT UPSET BY IN-FORM CZECH
Berdych, who claimed the Paris Masters last November, produced a wide display of winners to prevent the Australian from playing his defensive game.
The former wold No. 1 Hewitt captured Indian Wells back-to-back in 2002 and 2002 and lost to Federer in last year's marquee finale here in the California desert.
"He's a tough player, especially on this kind of court," Hewitt said about his Czech opponent. "It suits his game well. He's extremely quick around the court, moves really well.
Berdych will next play Australian Open winner-up Marcos Baghdatis.
The Cypriot native rallied from a set down to defeat 2004 Roland Garros winner and seventh seed Gaston Gaudio 6-7 6-3 6-2.
FEDERER PUSHED
A shaky Roger Federer was taken to three sets by Belgium's Olivier Rochus as he remains on course to reach a 10th consecutive final at Indian Wells on Tuesday.
Federer, who is also chasing a third consecutive Indian Wells title, came from a set down and made 59 unforced errors but broke Rochus with a superb backhand winner down the line to win 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
"Once you're down a set, you're not allowed to make any more mistakes," Federer said. "I'm relieved I'm through."
The World No. 1 meets French teenage star Richard Gasquet, who upset Federer at Monte Carlo last year. Gasquet had beaten Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty 6-3, 6-4. Federer has played 19 matches and only lost one this season.
RAFA CRUISES
Second seed Rafael Nadal eased into a fourth-round meeting with another Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean after defeating Mardy Fish of the USA 6-1, 6-4.
Sixth seed Ivan Ljubicic defeated French youngster Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2. Ljubicic faces Croatian Mario Ancic in the quarters.
