French Open 2017: Kyle Edmund powers past Gastao Elias at Roland Garros

British No 2 Kyle Edmund has reached the second round of the French Open after beating Portugal’s Gastao Elias 6-3 6-2 7-5.

It’s the third straight year Edmund has made the second round, though the 22-year-old is yet to venture further at Roland Garros.

The Brit will face either home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Renzo Olivo for a place in the third round, with the pair set to face-off later this evening.

Edmund eases to first round win

Edmund raced to a 5-1 lead in the opening set, and while he was broken while attempting to serve it out, he made no mistake the second time around.
A dominant second set followed, with Edmund winning two of his four break-point opportunities to take control of the match.
Elias broke Edmund early in the third, but the Brit responded with two breaks of his own to clinch the final set 7-5.
