With the quality of the tennis breathtakingly high, the Swiss star produced a booming forehand winner to set the tone in the fourth-set tiebreak, going on to level the scores at 6-7 6-3 5-7 7-6 and send the match into a fifth and final frame.
Wawrinka, who won at Roland Garros in 2015, is gunning for his fourth Grand Slam title in consecutive years.
Murray, who has yet to win the French, is hoping to go one better than his losing effort in last year’s final against Novak Djokovic.
