An enjoyable contest was unsurprisingly wrapped up by the Swiss legend, albeit with a noticeably-high number of errors.
Indeed, Spaniard Granollers was able to break Federer twice despite going out in straight sets.
Federer's dominance in this 107-minute contest came mostly early on, but some fine recovery tennis staved off any glimmering hopes of Granollers extending the match beyond three sets.
The 17-times grand slam champion faces either Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus or Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in the third round.
The second seed cantered through the opening set but then let his guard down. dropping serve in the second and third sets, but he had too much firepower for the world number 57 to handle, breaking straight back both times.
Federer, who has not won a major since Wimbledon in 2012, ended the contest on his first match point when Granollers returned a serve into the net.
There was no repeat of Sunday's scenes when a fan ran on to court for a selfie with 17-times grand slam champion Federer, the only trouble the Swiss encountering on Wednesday was a 4-2 second-set deficit which he quickly fixed.
Federer, on collision course with Nishikori in the semi-final, will play Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur in round three after he beat Marcos Baghdatis 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-2.
"I might even go so far to say I have actually almost never seen him play before," Federer said of Sarajevo-based Dzumhur.
