The Murray brothers held their nerve to complete a 6-1 3-6 6-4 6-4 victory over the visitors and ensure that the last-four clash moved into the final day.
Argentina, who surprisingly put Del Potro out to play in the doubles after his epic five-set victory over Murray on Friday, now hold a slender 2-1 advantage ahead of the final singles rubbers on Sunday.
Del Potro had been expected to be rested in preparation for the final singles match - which could well turn out to be the deciding rubber - but he was thrust into the action and he and Mayer got off to a very sluggish start.
The Murray brothers lost just a solitary game as they took the first set in comprehensive fashion with Jamie particularly dominant, fresh from winning the US Open doubles title.

The Argentine pair roared back in impressive fashion in the second set and the Glasgow crowd braced themselves for another lengthy five-set thriller.
But the Murray duo responded with real class to take the third and fourth sets by just a single break of serve to ensure that the tie went to a final day.
Del Potro will now likely have to deliver for Argentina in the fifth and final match on Sunday afternoon with Murray expected to take the tie into a deciding rubber.
An emotional Jamie lauded the Scottish crowd after the match while captain Leon Smith urged the home fans to be at their loudest as the defending champions look to claim a famous and improbable victory.
