Simon, currently the highest-ranked player in the French squad, was a heavy favourite going into the match against world number 89 James Ward and showed why with a confident display.
In front of an excited crowd at Queen's club, Simon broke in the sixth game of the first set and the third game of the second set to build a dominant two-set lead.
Ward had played well until that point but with little reward, leading to a 6-1 collapse in the third as France took the first point.
