Stefanos Tsitsipas is through to the last 16 of the Australian Open for the fourth time in his career after a 6-2 7-6(5) 6-3 win over Tallon Griekspoor in two hours and six minutes on Rod Laver Arena.
Tsitsipas was able to overcome adversity in the second set, when he had to save a set point, and also showcased his forehand throughout to progress having not dropped a set in his three matches played.
The 24-year-old sets up a tantalising clash with world No. 16 Jannik Sinner in the fourth round. The No. 15 seed came from two sets down for the first time in his career to beat Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 4-6 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-0.
"Fair crack at the whip mate," Tsitsipas quipped to the amusement of the Australian fans inside the show court.
"It was a good mixing up today. I was mixing up my slice and opening the court. I think the placement of my serve was exceptional today. I didn't have a lot of rallies on my serve which helped a lot today and I enjoyed the weather today. What a lovely day for tennis.
"It's great playing in sunshine today. I enjoyed fighting my way through today. It wasn't easy at times. I had the crowd with me as always. If there are any real estate brokers or agencies please let me know!"
The world No. 4 was helped by the sun as he got the first break of the match. A Griekspoor smash, which should have been a winner, crashed into the net to gift Tsitsipas a 3-2 lead.
Griekspoor appeared to be losing confidence and Tsitsipas got another break to be able to serve out the set when the Dutchman sent an easy backhand into the net. Tsitsipas converted his first set point with an unreturnable first serve.
With Tsitsipas applying heavy pressure for most of the second set, Griekspoor managed to fend off two break points to go 4-3 up. Griekspoor stuck to his serve and volley style and forced the Greek to rescue a set point, but the No. 3 seed was able to pick holes in his defence in the tie-break.
He got a mini-break after a 14-shot rally ended with him ripping a crosscourt forehand winner to go 5-3 up. At 6-5 down, Griekspoor crashed a forehand into the net to the delight of Tsitsipas who let out a fist pump.
Tsitsipas strengthened his grip on the match when he broke the Griekspoor serve once again, going 3-1 up because of another unforced error from his opponent.
Griekspoor was unable to mount a meaningful response and Tsitsipas finished with a smash on his third match point to book a meeting with Sinner.
