Federer broke straight out of the gate and after four games had only conceded four points to his Croatian opponent - with a double break putting him in firm control.
Cilic won his first game to make it 4-1 but he could not claw Federer back, and the first set was over in 24 minutes.
Cilic came back in the second set though, taking Federer to a tie-break, which the big Croatian won 7-5.
Federer responded in kind and won the third 6-3 to get to within one set of his 20th Grand Slam title.
