However, readers have little faith that British hope Andy Murray will end his Grand Slam duck in Melbourne, with the Scot receiving just eight per cent of votes in our online poll.
Federer has won the title at the Rod Laver Arena on three occasions, but his last success came in 2007 when he beat Fernando Gonzalez in the final.
He was beaten by great rival Rafael Nadal last year in a classic final, but while the Spaniard struggled with injuries for the rest of the season Federer went on to win the French Open and Wimbledon.
Despite Nadal's injury woes, Eurosport readers still see him as the most likely to challenge Federer, with 26 per cent believing the Spaniard can defend his title.
Next comes 2008 champion Novak Djokovic with 13 per cent. The Serbian is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2009 season in which he failed to reach a Grand Slam final.
Just six per cent think Juan Martin del Potro can make it two Slams in a row, with the US Champion trailing the Other option on seven per cent.
Russia's Nikolay Davydenko looks a dangerous sleeper given his recent wins in Qatar and at the ATP Tour Finals at the end of last season.

Here is what some of your have been saying on the site:
Andywytchard: I've always had the impression that Federer doesn't need to play that many tournaments to find his form so I'm sure he will not be undercooked for the Open. It should be a good one with Nadal back and for once I feel there is a more than two people who can win it. I think Djokovic will have a big year this year and maybe even sneak the Australian or the US Open.
Half A Brain: There is no rule for winning a Grand Slam. I have seen some who have came out of nowhere, won a Grand Slam, and then disappeared to the darker side of the ranking table a few years later. Gaston Gaudio? Guillermo Vilas? Michael Stich? Richard Krajicek? Even Pat Cash? So Davydenko has a chance to fight for a Grand Slam if he can catch a sleepy Roger or a still recovering Nadal. Don't worry about Murray though, he will be gone by the third round as usual.
YiannisP: It's a wide open season with anyone in the top six able to win the Grand Slams. But the only one I see for sure getting one is Roger Federer.
Destong09: At this stage, I would pick Nadal over Federer to win the upcoming Australian Open. Federer is yet to get back his focus and his best form. If Federer cannot improve his serving game and regain his confidence and consistency (stop his crazy high unforced error count), he won't have much chance to survive Nadal, Del Potro and even Davydenko in the Australian Open.
Srdjan_smiljanic: I'm sure that Federer won't go further than the semi-finals (and will put money on it). Rafa can make the final if he gets lucky, but he can't win again on this surface. For me, Del Potro, Djokovic, Davydenko and maybe Murray will decide the first Grand Slam winner. My pick is a Djokovic-Del Potro final - if they don't play in earlier stages of the tournament.
