Capriati won the 2001 and 2002 Australian Open titles as well as the 2001 French Open. But the injury kept her from playing at this year's Australian Open and the surgery could keep her out for months more.
Physician Craig Morgan said Capriati will need rest for five to seven days before she can start exercising her shoulder.
"I expect a complete recovery after rehabilitation," Morgan said. "Once rehabilitation is through, Jennifer can resume a full competitive schedule."
Capriati has won 14 tour titles, but her most recent crown came in 2003 at New Haven in the final US Open tune-up event.
