Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares win thrilling doubles final

Murray and Soares, playing their debut Slam together, battled back from a set down to beat veterans Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek 2-6 6-4 7-5.

This was Murray's third consecutive major final, having lost in last year's Wimbledon and US Open finals with Australia's John Peers.

It was a dream Saturday for Scotland, with Gordon Reid winning the men's wheelchair singles earlier in the day.

Murray's brother Andy can complete the hat-trick when he takes on Novak Djokovic in the men's singles final on Sunday - and the doubles winner's brother was in the stadium to watch the triumphant moment.

"Andy - you should be in bed! I don't know WHY you're here," laughed Jamie Murray as he waved to his singles finalist brother in the stands.

The victory vindicated Murray's decision to split with Peers despite coming so close in the last two grand slams - and his new partner thanked the Scot for asking if they could team up.

"It's only one month, but I think we can retire now!" laughed Soares at the prizegiving ceremony, referring both to this win and the pair's victory at ATP Sydney earlier in January.

"Thanks for playing such good tennis this month - I just hope we can carry on and have a chance to play many more matches like this."

Up against an unseeded, veteran pairing with a combined age of 80, doubles specialists Murray and Soares were marginal favourites going into the match - despite the fact that they were playing in their first grand slam together.

Yet they looked anything but likely winners in an error-strewn opening set, Nestor and Stepanek consistently sharper at the net and tactically more astute, with Soares in particular struggling to find his timing.

The second set saw Murray and Soares step up their game, however, and by the time they came to within a point of a double-break half-way through the final set there seemed only one possible outcome.

Stepanek and Nestor weren't finished, however: they saved the break point - as they did time and again during the match - and then later broke back as Murray and Soares were serving for the match.

Another break of serve followed, however, giving the Scot and his Brazilian partner a second attempt to claim the trophy.

And this time they made no mistake, Soares finding a string of good serves and clinching the Australian Open - a first men's doubles grand slam title for both men.
