Top seed Andy Roddick has been handed a tough opening draw, being paired against Sweden's Thomas Johansson, the 2002 Australian Open winner and former top 10 player.
In the second round, Roddick could meet Benjamin Becker, the improving German who reached the semi-finals of the tournament in San Jose last week, defeating Marat Safin en route.
Defending champion Tommy Haas is the second seed in Memphis, while British teen star Andy Murray, at a career-high ranking following his run to the final in San Jose, is the number three seed.
