Indian Wells tournament chief Ray Moore got the ball rolling by talking about how the best male players have been "carrying the sport" for years and that women should "get down on their knees" to give thanks for the day that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal entered the game.
Moore has since resigned in the wake of his comments, but not before world number one Novak Djokovic had backed him up on the pay issue, suggesting that he believes men should get a greater share of the prize money since they attract more fans.
Djokovic has now apologised for what he said in a clarification statement, blaming post-match "euphoria and adrenalin" for the fact that he "made some comments that are not the best articulation of my view".
The Guardian asked world number two Murray for his view, and he was unequivocal.
"I think there should be equal pay, 100 per cent, at all combined events," the Scot said.
"The whole thing was very strange and very disappointing.
"I don't understand at all where he [Ray Moore] was coming from at all with those comments. It made no sense at all...
"I think it will happen one day. The crowds are coming to watch the women as well.
"The whole thing just doesn't stack up - it changes on a day-to-day basis depending on the matches you get."
