Often celebrated as much for her fashion sense as her tennis ability, this week Tennis Spy casts an eye over America's Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Full name: Bethanie Mattek-Sands
Nationality: American (born in Rochester, Minnesota)
Age: 24 (DOB: March 23, 1985)
World Ranking: 52
Career highlights: Winner of five ITF singles and seven WTA doubles titles. She has also reached one WTA singles final (in Quebec last year). Her best performance in a Grand Slam came at Wimbledon last year when she reached the fourth round.
General: Mattek-Sands, who was just plain old Mattek until she got married last year, is coming to a bit of a crossroads in her career. Last year she enjoyed a career-best season and climbed to 37 in the rankings. But she has struggled with a hip injury early in this campaign and is currently down at 52 in the rankings and 114 in the race.
But her continuing good form with various partners in doubles demonstrates that she hasn't forgotten how to swing a racquet. She has won three doubles titles this year - two with Nadia Petrova and one with Raquel Kops-Jones - and moved up to 25 in the doubles rankings. So is her career pausing for breath or grinding to a halt?
Strengths: Exceptionally quick around the court and there are few balls she can't get to. She is very good at the net, something that shows in her strong performances both on grass and in doubles. She has a decent array of shots and relies on skill more than power.
Weaknesses: Has unquestionable natural ability but the mental side of the game sometimes gets her into trouble. It's not so much nerves that get the better of her, more a case of poor tactics and shot selection letting her down. Clever players who can adapt their game can cause her problems, which is another reason why she perhaps has enjoyed more success on the quicker, more one-dimensional doubles circuit.
Her inability to adapt has seen her struggle in three set matches in the past. She doesn't have the power to dominate players either and at just 5' 6" is somewhat on the small side.
Prospects: Getting to the age where it's time for her to make the next step if she wants to establish herself as consistent top-20 player. This may be tough to do especially as injuries have set back her development. She is also without a regular coach to guide her in the right direction, particularly when it comes to decision making during matches. However, she is unquestionably a talented individual and more than capable of winning a couple of WTA events before her career is out. In doubles she could do even more. She has a natural flair for the game and has won her seven WTA titles with six different players. A Grand Slam title in doubles is a realistic aim.
Personal: Is perhaps best know for her eccentric fashion sense on the court, which has seen her wearing amongst other things leopard print outfits, a stripped cowboy hat and, at Wimbledon in 2006, a pair of football socks.
Was asked by Wimbledon officials to donate her 2006 Wimbledon outfit to the club's museum.
Married insurance executive Justin Sands in November 2008 and immediately started to use a double-barrelled name on tour.
Grew up training at Chris Evert's academy in Boca Raton, Florida.
Began playing tennis when she was five.
Lists Steffi Graf and Monica Seles as her tennis heroes. Her other sporting heroes are Michael Jordan and NFL quarterback Brett Favre.
Made her Fed Cup debut for the USA but lost both matches in a tie against the Czech Republic.
