Adam Peaty made his return to the pool following a Covid-19 diagnosis to help Team GB to secure a spot in the men's 4x100m medley final.
But he displayed good power to help the British team finish second in their heat, just over half a second behind the USA, to seal their spot in the final on Sunday.
The GB team, comprised of Peaty, Oliver Morgan, Joe Litchfield and Matt Richards, clocked a time of 3:32.13 - the fifth-fastest time of the Saturday morning heats.
Peaty's return means he could still be brought into the fold for Saturday evening's mixed 4x100 medley relay final. Team GB qualified for the final on Friday, without the two-time Olympic champion in the team.
Team GB won gold in the 4x100 mixed medley relay at the Tokyo 2020 Games, while they also collected silver in the men's event three years ago.
In the first men's 4x100m medley heat on Saturday, Leon Marchand was in action as France pipped China to the fastest time across the two heats.
Marchand has been imperious in the pool so far at the Paris Games, collecting four gold medals and garnering huge support from the home crowd. He could receive his fifth on Sunday as part of the four-man team.
Meanwhile, in the women's 50m freestyle heat, Great Britain's Anna Hopkin finished fourth, meaning her qualification for the semi-final has been secured.
The Team GB quartet of Kathleen Dawson, Angharad Evans, Keanna MacInnes and Freya Anderson failed to qualify for the women's 4x100m medley relay final, posting the 10th-fastest time of the heats.
Elsewhere, Britain's Dan Jervis also did not qualify for the men's 1500m freestyle final after finishing eighth in his heat.
Ireland's Daniel Wiffen posted the fastest time of the heats, recording 14:40.34.
