Ronnie O'Sullivan hit a historic 153,
the highest break in snooker history, against
Ryan Day in a blistering 5-0 whitewash win in the quarter-finals of the
World Open in Yushan, China.
Seven-time world champion O'Sullivan had looked in fine form at the tournament,
beating British Open champion Shaun Murphy 5-3 in his previous match.
And he followed that up with magical runs of 153, 62, 110, 103 and 95 in a sparkling 56-minute victory over the former British Open winner.
O'Sullivan will face Wu Yize in the opening semi-final on Saturday at 06:00 GMT after the International Championship winner completed a 5-1 win over Mark Allen, boosted by breaks of 83, 140, 77, 109 and 53.
World No. 1 Judd Trump also showed his scoring class in favourable conditions with a 5-1 win over Hossein Vafaei that included breaks of 88, 109 and 113.
Trump will take on Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in the second semi-final at 11:30, a repeat of the 2019 World Open final won 10-5 by Trump, after the Thai speed merchant enjoyed a 5-1 win over Gary Wilson boosted by 88, 99 and and 70.

Result: Trump 5-1 Vafaei (113-0)
Judd with a majestic clearance of 113. He is through to the semi-finals with a 5-1 win.
Trump 4-1 Vafaei (99-0)
Final reds are on the left side of the table. A little bit tricky, but not when you can pot like Trump. Cracking cut on a red to right middle.
Trump 4-1 Vafaei (60-0)
Trump rolls in a routine black off spot, and the world No. 1 will be heading for the semi-finals in Yushan. Can he finish with a century? Only question still needing answered in this match.
Trump 4-1 Vafaei (45-0)
Judd rolls in blue and leaves an angle on reds. Uses the rest. Screws white into reds, and they have opened like a dream. Huge chance now then for a 5-1 victory.
Trump 4-1 Vafaei (28-0)
Can build a healthy lead here without disturbing the reds. Taking what is there.
Trump 4-1 Vafaei (13-0)
Judd with a corking long red. Slams that home with pace. And he is in prime position for the winning thrust too. What a chance to get this match wrapped up.
Trump 3-1 Vafaei (70-22)
The concession comes from Hossein as he sticks up a red. Judd needs one more for victory. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh now with a 4-1 lead over Gary Wilson. Looks like he will be providing the opponent for the winner of this match. At the table as we speak looking to close it out.
Trump 3-1 Vafaei (70-22)
Down to the final red with the 'Prince of Persia' chasing four snookers. Probably more chance of seeing another 153 today.
Trump 3-1 Vafaei (70-14)
33 break from Judd as a plant on two reds is drained. Looks all over bar the potting. Hossein requires three snookers. Long way back. Blue doesn't help his cause. Now needs four snookers.
Trump 3-1 Vafaei (69-0)
Huge chance for Hossein to level at 2-2. Not taken and he is staring 4-1 in the face. Judd powers in blue to the green pocket. That should be a done deal for this frame too.
Trump 3-1 Vafaei (49-0)
Judd with a lead of 37 points in this fifth frame, but far from decisive. Trump then rolls in a red to right middle after a poor safety by his opponent. In goes brown to left centre. Chance for Judd to push on.
Trump 3-1 Vafaei (25-0)
Judd looking to reassert himself after pinching a scrappy fifth frame. Nice red is drained to the green bag. And he will look to make some progress at the business end of the table.
‘What is going on there?’ – Trump distracted by ‘flashing’ hoardings

Trump 2-1 Vafaei (72-54)
Judd mops up to the pink, and it is a 3-1 lead for Judd. Not overly convincing, but gets the job done. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh with a 3-1 lead on the other table.
Trump 2-1 Vafaei (52-54)
All happening as Judd flukes a snooker back from being left in a snooker. Hossein misses the red on baulk cushion. Leaves the free ball. Trump trying to work out his next move. Leaves another snooker behind pink. And Vafaei misses again. Trump drops in a red along baulk cushion. Looks like 3-1 here with colours to come.
Trump 2-1 Vafaei (40-54)
Would be a huge frame for Hossein to pinch. Sizing up a double on the final red. But opts instead for the safety.
Trump 2-1 Vafaei (40-22)
Into the lead in the frame then, but still work to be done here. Sizing up a low black. In it goes. But he misses a red by some distance. Didn't expect that.
Trump 2-1 Vafaei (9-22)
But a missed red on 22 brings the visit to a premature halt. Trump with a fabulous pot on a red using the rest and in goes another red. Two for the price of one.
Trump 2-1 Vafaei (0-11)
Hossein presented with first poke at the balls in this fourth frame after another usual safety error by Judd. Starting to look like he is warming to the task. Would dearly love to restore party at the mid-sesh.
‘I don’t know if that will ever be beaten’ – Dale on ‘amazing’ O’Sullivan 153 break
Video credit: TNT Sports
Un-Nooh 3-0 Wilson
Thepchaiya Un-Nooh with a run of 99 in the third frame to go with 81 in the first frame, and he is powering clear of Gary Wilson.
Trump 2-0 Vafaei (5-69)
This has been a very fine break from Vafaei. 68 as a red stays out down a side rail, but more than enough to close the gap. Back to 2-1 behind. Judd will feel like he has missed an opportunity with the rest shot on red a rare blunder.
Trump 2-0 Vafaei (5-55)
Break moves to 46 with four reds left on deck. Chance to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
Trump 2-0 Vafaei (5-32)
Big visit in progress here from Hossein. Would expect him to build a decent lead in this third frame.
Trump 2-0 Vafaei (5-11)
Another unlikely miss from Judd using the rest. Seemed to lose his technique attempting to can a red. What has Hossein got in response here? Has to start scoring here, surely.
Trump 2-0 Vafaei (1-0)
Judd with a fluke on a red early in the third frame. But he then misses brown to left middle at pace. Didn't see that one coming. Hasn't left much for the 'Prince of Persia'.
Trump 2-0 Vafaei (0-0)
88 and 109 from Judd Trump in the race to five. Not hanging around out there. Striking that white ball with real conviction.
Trump 1-0 Vafaei (109-26)
A total clearance of 109 from the world No.1. Total dominance from Judd. He is two up and coasting.
Trump 1-0 Vafaei (84-26)
Solid cut on a black along the top cushion followed by the frame-ball red from Judd. Showing the importance of recovery pots. In goes a double on the final red. Another chance for a century.
Trump 1-0 Vafaei (53-26)
Doesn't look like Judd is afflicted by tension out there. Just picking up on the Hossein misfires here. Like O'Sullivan earlier, looks at one with the favourable table conditions in China.
Trump 1-0 Vafaei (15-26)
Hossein left to sit and reflect on that missed pink in his seat. Can be a brutally unforgiving sport.
Trump 1-0 Vafaei (0-26)
Another chance for Vafaei to extend his lead in this frame after being left in by Judd, but he butchers the pink to right middle. Bad miss. "That suggests nerves and tension to me," comments Dominic Dale on TNT Sports.
Trump 1-0 Vafaei (0-10)
Off we go then with this second frame of a possible nine in Yushan. A very smart start to the match by Judd. But he is short with an attempt to escape from a snooker. Hossein handed a chance, but quickly loses the white. Just safety to follow. Meanwhile, a break of 81 from Thepchaiya Un-Nooh sees him lead Gary Wilson 1-0.
Read: How O'Sullivan made the impossible possible
TNT Sports commentator Dave Hendon marvels at Ronnie O'Sullivan's latest piece of history. A break of 153 is the highest-ever recorded and shows the Rocket for the great he is. All players have the capacity to raise their standard, but no one else can raise the bar quite so high. His ability to craft a break like this and control his emotions at the same time is what marks him out from the rest.

Trump 0-0 Vafaei (92-0)
Could be opening up this quarter-final with a century of his own. Not been short of them this week in Yushan. But he misses a red to right middle on 88. No ton, but frame in the bag. He leads 1-0 in race to five.
Trump 0-0 Vafaei (65-0)
First frame looks in the bag for the Juddernaut.
Trump 0-0 Vafaei (51-0)
This already looks ominous for Vafaei in the opening frame. But he fails to develop position on the pink off a red. Takes on a blue to green bag. Makes it look easy. In goes a tough black from side rail. Lovely recovery pot.
Trump 0-0 Vafaei (17-0)
Bit of a blunder by Hossein with the safety shot, and suddenly Judd is invited to have first real prod at these balls. Now then. We know that these tables are made for scoring in Yushan. What he is going to come up with at this visit?
Trump 0-0 Vafaei (5-0)
A big welcome for the world No. 1 Judd Trump before his quarter-final meeting with Hossein Vafaei at the World Open. Off we go then. Anybody for a 155 this afternoon?
Wu 5-1 Allen (97-4)
Allen leaves a red over a top pocket, and that should signal the end of his campaign at the World Open. Heading through to take on the history-maker Ronnie O'Sullivan, the 153 man, on Saturday. Should be quite the semi-final. Warm words from Mark Allen to Wu, who completes an impressive 5-1 win.
Wu 4-1 Allen (53-4)
Wu looks to be close to the winning line as he goes beyond 50. Allen leaving a red over a middle bag, but Wu has just screwed the white back into a top bag on the cusp of victory. Incredible.
Wu 4-1 Allen (53-64)
Chance for Allen to avoid the whitewash. And he takes out the colours to win a scrappy fifth frame. Plenty of chances for Wu to complete the whitewash. But can't see it out, and Mark with a very decent steal on the final black. Back to 4-1 behind.
'Taken complete control' - O'Sullivan rolls in another century against Day in third frame
Video credit: TNT Sports
Result: O'Sullivan 5-0 Day
Breaks of 153, 62, 110, 103 and 95 from the snooker GOAT today. Quite magnificent, majestic, magical...however you want to describe that performance, it was very, very special.
O'Sullivan 4-0 Day (96-6)
Well, this has just been a masterclass from the seven-time world champion. 95 to finish, and he is through to the semi-finals with a 5-0 whitewash win. His 96th ranking event semi-final. Where he will take on Wu Yize or Mark Allen.
O'Sullivan 4-0 Day (64-6)
Racing through these balls like a knife through butter. Can do no wrong in this form.
O'Sullivan 4-0 Day (41-6)
Another supreme pot on a black by Ronnie as he clatters through the pack of reds. The balls are all nicely placed for a match-winning century.
O'Sullivan 4-0 Day (26-6)
This is just remarkable scoring from O'Sullivan. Tables are conducive to break-building, but the balls still need putting away. Suspect Day won't play another shot in this match from here.
O'Sullivan 4-0 Day (9-6)
Well, he is human after all as a cut on black fails to drop. Can Ryan piece something together here? Looking to avoid the whitewash. But a poor positional shot and then safety is inviting more trouble here. Back to the table comes O'Sullivan.
Wu Yize 4-0 Allen
Looks like it will be a semi-final between Wu and Ronnie on Saturday. Wu with breaks of 83, 140, 77 and 109. Allen has only made three points so far.
O'Sullivan 4-0 Day (0-0)
O'Sullivan with breaks of 153, 62, 110 and 103 so far this morning. Just another day at the office for the snooker GOAT.
O'Sullivan 3-0 Day (108-0)
103 from Ronnie this time. His third century of the match in four frames.
O'Sullivan 3-0 Day (64-0)
Could be another century incoming too from Ronnie, who is missing nothing out there. A 4-0 lead is a done deal.
O'Sullivan 3-0 Day (30-0)
"His best is still on a different level to everybody else," comments Neal Foulds on TNT Sports. "Maybe don't see it as much these days, but similar to Saudi [when he made two 147s in the same session]. "
O'Sullivan 3-0 Day (14-0)
Another sublime pot on a difficult red by Ronnie, who is in full flow out there after that historic 16-red clearance in the first frame.
O'Sullivan 2-0 Day (110-8)
Well, really is remarkable. 110 break from the snooker GOAT. This table looks ripe for scoring, and Ronnie has never been shy in that department. Looking for two more frames to reach the semi-finals. Wu Yize leads Mark Allen 3-0 on the other main showpiece table. All happening this morning.
O'Sullivan 2-0 Day (88-8)
Another frame is going to be put away by O'Sullivan, who looks like he is going to breeze through to the last four at this rate. Could be another century too in the third frame. Just for good measure.
O'Sullivan 2-0 Day (48-8)
Feels like Ryan is struggling a bit to stay afloat out there. Little wonder. You start off your biggest match in about four years, and your opponent hits you with a 153 straight off the bat. Ronnie on the move again. "He's in complete control of this match," says Dave Hendon on comms.
O'Sullivan 1-0 Day (84-24)
So "just" the 62 from Ronnie in the second frame after that monster 153 in the opening frame. What a start to Friday morning. Really is. The joys of O'Sullivan in snooker is you never know what you are going to get. Not even him, probably.
O'Sullivan 1-0 Day (57-24)
Ronnie still has a match to win here, but leaving Day in a snooker provides him with scope to build a lead in this second frame. Looks to be back in the groove then. In goes red along top cush, followed by black. Heading for a 2-0 lead.
O'Sullivan 1-0 Day (18-24)
Trying to settle back down after that historic first frame is proving a real challenge. But Ronnie is back at the business end again after Ryan misses a red by some distance. Just when you think you've seen it all from O'Sullivan in snooker, he goes and does that. Amazing, amazing player. Really is. "Needless to say this is a very different frame from the first," comments Dave Hendon on TNT Sports.
O'Sullivan 1-0 Day (1-24)
"If you are just waking up, we've just witnessed a 153 from Ronnie O'Sullivan, an all-time record," comments Neal Foulds. Meanwhile, this frame is a bit scrappy as both players try to come to their senses after that astonishing opening frame. Day picking out a long red as he tries to settle down.
O'Sullivan 1-0 Day (0-22)
Remarkable stuff really is. Never been done before. A break for the ages. Onto the second frame. "A privilege to be here to watch that. To speak over it," says former word No. 3 Neal Foulds on comms. Even Ronnie looks bewildered by that clearance. But anyway, onto the second frame.
O'Sullivan 0-0 Day (169-0)
And that is the highest break of all time in snooker as black disappears. Incredible. 153 from the snooker GOAT.
O'Sullivan 0-0 Day (141-0)
Onto the colours then with the break reaching 125. A possible 153 on.
O'Sullivan 0-0 Day (120-0)
Excellent pot on a high black with two reds still to come....
O'Sullivan 0-0 Day (104-0)
Five reds left up and O'Sullivan has already reached 89. 12 reds, and 11 blacks. A possible 155 clearance on here. Nothing is safe.
O'Sullivan 0-0 Day (80-0)
Ronnie could make more than a 147 here in the opening frame..just putting that out there.
O'Sullivan 0-0 Day (80-0)
Well, just not what Day was looking for. Ends up leaving a free ball for the snooker GOAT, and this looks like a chance to get the old cue arm working for Ronnie. Brilliant shot on the black by O'Sullivan to open up the reds. This a huge chance to make a massive break when you add the free ball. Already on his way to the first frame.
O'Sullivan 0-0 Day (4-0)
Would suggest it is important for Day to make a fast start to the day, so to speak. Ryan already in a spot of both trying and failing to escape from a couple of snookers.
