The climax of the snooker season is upon us with the biggest names in the sport contesting the World Championship at the famous Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Mark Selby started as the defending champion and opened his campaign, as is customary, on Saturday morning against Jamie Jones. Selby had not played since losing to Liam Highfield in the last-64 of the Welsh Open in March, having spoken openly of his mental health issues , but produced his 100th century at the World Championship - 91 at the Crucible and nine in qualifying - in a 10-7 win.
Selby then lost to Yan Bingtao to suffer an early end to his Crucible campaign.
Ronnie O'Sullivan came into the tournament having moved back to world No. 1 following an impressive season so far, and has a seventh world crown in his sights, which would draw him level with fellow great Stephen Hendry. O'Sullivan saw a fellow pro tell him he should retire ahead of the tournament, but produced a polished performance to beat Dave Gilbert 10-5; although the match was not without controversy after The Rocket was referred to the WPBSA disciplinary committee.
O'Sullivan had picked Neil Robertson as the player to watch in Sheffield, with the Australian claiming four titles this season including The Masters in January. Robertson beat Ashley Hugill 10-5 in the first round, and then made a 147 in his shock 13-12 second-round loss to Jack Lisowski.
Fellow Class of ’92 grandees Mark Williams and John Higgins are, according to Jimmy White and Alan McManus, favourites for the title. Williams followed up a 10-3 win against Michael White with a 13-3 defeat of Jackson Page to set up a quarter-final against Yan; while Higgins defeated Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Noppon Saengkham on his way to his quarter-final showdown with Lisowski.
Judd Trump has struggled to maintain his lofty standards this season, with only two titles to his name at the Turkish Masters and the Champion of Champions, but can never be discounted and saw off a potentially tricky first-round match against Hossein Vafaei. and followed that up with a hard-fought 13-11 win against Anthony McGill in round two.
We are finally now at the final as O'Sullivan and Trump prepare to do battle...
