Ding rattled in a break of 102 to win the opening frame after McGill had scored 40, and the world number 14 failed to get out of single figures in the next six frames, scoring 0, 6, 1, 1, 0 and 0 in the face of Ding’s supreme dominance.
The 2016 World Championship finalist enjoyed breaks of 81, 126, 64, 75 and 99 in the process as he obliterated his opponent. In the second frame, Ding was 11 reds into a possible 147 attempt before missing on the black.
McGill managed to get 19 on the scoreboard in the eighth and final frame of the session, but a break of 73 gave Ding an 8-0 lead and he departed The Crucible to a standing ovation.
With top seeds Mark Selby and Ronnie O’Sullivan both out of the competition, Ding looks a real contender for his first world title.
