Shanghai Masters 2026 recap: Judd Trump whitewashes John Higgins while Wu Yize beats Shaun Murphy on final ball

World No.1 Judd Trump whitewashed John Higgins 6-0 in a dominant display at the Shanghai Masters, while Wu Yize beat Shaun Murphy 6-5 on the final ball. Earlier, Zhao Xintong dominated Neil Robertson and defending champion Kyren Wilson kept his title bid on course with victory over Mark Williams.

The Ace in the Pack hit 515 unanswered points, including three century breaks, as he cantered through to the the semi-finals.

He will meet world champion Wu Yize, who dramatically beat Shaun Murphy in a 6-5 thriller.

Wu led 3-1 at the interval, but Murphy fought back to level. The match dropped in quality as it wore on, and it looked like Murphy's experience would tell, grinding out frames to move 5-4 up.

Despite Wu forcing a decider, Murphy was in pole position to win the final frame, only to miss a red to a corner pocket.

Wu returned to clear the table, needing the final black to secure victory and a clash with Trump.

Earlier, reigning champion Kyren Wilson kept his title defence on track with a dramatic 6-5 victory over Mark Williams.

The 'Warrior' hit breaks of 76 and 84 on the way to a 3-1 lead over the Welshman, who he had beaten in eight of their nine previous meetings.

However, the three-time world champion came roaring back, reeling off four successive frames with contributions of 100 and 124 on the way to a 5-3 advantage.

Nevertheless, Wilson controlled the last three frames, with runs of 61, 54 and 113 booking his place in the semi-finals.

There, he will play world No. 3 Zhao Xintong, who hit breaks of 117, 102, 98, 85 and 60 on route to a 6-0 rout of world No. 2 Neil Robertson.

It's nowhere near, and was very tricky. Murphy goes for safety, with the green and brown providing nice cover in baulk.

A couple safeties later, Murphy spots a plant and sinks it.

What now? There are chances to win the frame, but Murphy curls the cue ball into the pocket after potting the blue!

It feels like it is a question of who can find the better snookers. Murphy has just found a pretty decent one.

Wu spins his way out of it, leaving the thinnest of cuts for Murphy. He only needs the green and the brown.

There goes the green and the brown should go as well. And it does.

The frame is reaching the half-hour mark. Wu has another long pot and this time takes the yellow, but has snookered himself on the green!

A difficult cut for Murphy to get into a fantastic position for the frame but he can't find it!

Another mistake from Wu, and Murphy misses a simple red. Wu breathes a sigh of relief and pots looking to retake the lead.

The balls are all pretty scattered so clearing the table is not a formality. A missed cut on the yellow is evidence of that, and now Murphy returns.

Murphy does get underway but is not getting any luck at all. He does well to bridge over the green to keep going though.

After potting the pink in baulk, the cue ball drifts into no-man's land and once again, this scrappy frame is up for grabs.

Wu is fortunate not to put the cue ball but, having blasted the black ball towards baulk, doesn't have many colours in play.

The pink ball kisses the edge of the centre pocket and Murphy will return. Too risky.

However, it is valuable enough to put Murphy in a lovely snooker, but he escapes it without leaving an easy shot on.

Murphy tries a risk to get the black ball into play which appears to not pay off, but he manages to cut it finely enough to keep the break going.

The latest stat from that Trump match: The Ace put together an unanswered 515 points, still short of Ronnie O'Sullivan's record of 556.

An early blue reduces the potential, but this would be a statement and some, if he can clear the table.

Now that is just flamboyant! I think the cue ball hit four cushions, before stopping straight on the yellow as Trump moves into the colours.

And there it is. The table is cleared with a 142 break. Trump is in complete control at the interval.

Some frames are just unwinnable. This has been one of those. Trump has a maximum break of 144 on the cards as he moves out of reach, barring snookers.

Both styles produce interesting snooker, so no complaints here. After re-fixing his hair, Trump breaks.

He's playing off the blue and the brown so far, cleaning up the reds in baulk before working his way back to the top end via the green to take on the remaining reds. Very savvy play.

But the Welshman, sporting a new beard, missed this pivotal black and Kyren Wilson did not look back.

Who is the tournament favourite?

Such is the nature of snooker nowadays, it's hard to pick a frontrunner but, with just six players remaining, we can take an educated guess.

Kyren Wilson has come out on top in two high-quality clashes against high-quality opponents and the reigning champion looks at home with his cue this year.

However, it's hard to ignore Zhao Xintong, who's dropped just two frames in his two matches to the semi-finals.

A tournament decided by fine margins

Seven of the 18 matches this tournament have gone to a deciding frame. A further five have finished 6-4.

There has been so much high-quality snooker in Shanghai this week, so let's hope for some more today!

It makes Zhao Xintong's whitewash win over Neil Robertson earlier today all the more remarkable.
